Ryan Callahan and his agent expected this morning to finalize/sign off on contract with TB. Will be 5 or 6 yrs with likely AAV of $5.5M+.

Ryan Callahan is close to signing a long-term extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to a report from Chris Johnston of Sportsnet.


The 29-year-old was eligible to pursue unrestricted free agency on July 1, but a source indicated that a new deal with the Lightning is “imminent.” While the precise terms of the extension weren’t immediately available, it is believed to be in excess of five years and worth as much as $5.5-million per season.

Scott Bartlett, one of Callahan’s agents, tweeted on Tuesday night that the sides had found “common ground towards a new deal.”

Johnston says that because Callahan is in Tampa Bay, the New York Rangers will get a second-round pick back from the Lightning.

Callahan was traded to the Lightning for captain Martin St. Louis on March 5. He score six goals and 11 points in his 20 regular season games with the Lightning. Then he went scoreless in the playoffs, when the Lightning were swept by the Montreal Canadiens.

Apparently Ryan Callahan also scored a partial NTC which is huge as that was part of the hangup in NY. This guy will bring his golden lunchpail to work everyday, lead by example and never take a shift off. He is exactly what Tampa needs for veteran leadership. Yes the price and terms are wonky but that is the price teams pay in UFA right ?
