Thought he'd get a 2 year deal with the second being a one - way.
    Wings can't like this.
    Less competition for Sproul now.

Good for Almqvist. He said he would do it and he did. Clearly Detroit and his agent never saw eye to eye. Too bad really because it would have been interesting to see how well AA would have fared in the NHL.
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.

Sproul isn't staying with the Wings out of camp. Ouellet is ahead of him.

Agree with this. Ouellet will get his shot before Sproul. (technically he already did in the playoffs)

What are everyone's thoughts on Backman's future in DET? How does he compare in terms of upside with Sproul and Ouellet?

I have to disagree, only if Quincy walks will this happen (and i hope he does)
Sproul is right handed, i think in terms of need this gives him the upper hand.

Then you're disagreeing with pretty much every die-hard Wings fan over at Kukla's Korner. Ouellet is a better dman today, more ready. Babcock doesn't let guys jump ahead of others just because they are left or right-handed.

Agreed Ouellet looks like he's more ready than Sproul.
I just thought Almquist and Sproul were competing for a similar offensive role on the blue line.

Babcock usually throws the best guys out there, except for when he has a weird crush on someone. Generally all the D pairings are expected to start offense and move the puck. There isn't a particular spot that has "the offensive role" or something like that. And Ouellet isn't exactly a slouch.

If Almqvist would have made the team or Sproul makes the team I would expect small amounts of 2nd PP time for the first year now that Kronwall, Ericsson, DeKeyser and Smith are fairly solidified as a core. We'll see if Holland finds a UFA guy or trades for a veteran. I hope Quincey is let go and then they'll have Kindl (shrug), Lashoff (should be seventh plug guy) and Ouellet (will be seventh because of Babcock's seniority hard-on).

Wow I thought Almqvist was first in line for a roster spot this season. Oh well, the Wings just move on to Backman, Ouellet, Marchenko, or Sproul.
