Chicago would be trading Sharp for cap reasons so wouldn't make much sense to get an even more expensive guy in return.

Chicago will shed salary by trading Versteeg and either Rosizal or Leddy. In 2015, Oduya and Rosizal come off the books and will be replaced by Johns, Clendening, or Dahlbeck.

I wonder if it's more about cap. The savings they could see from a Sharp trade could be pretty beneficial next season when they need to make room for the Toews/Kane raises

Sharp's name has been coming up off and on in trade rumors for a couple few years now. I don't see it happening, but weirder things have happened.

If that was the case, then why would they even consider trading Sharp?

They'll give Versteeg away to save a bit of cap room this year.
It's not until Toews and Kane get raises that they really need to worry though.

To find a #2 C and to trade him while he's at his peak coming off a career year. And for the record, I agree with Fast Tony. I don't think Sharp gets traded.

I was looking at Sharp's numbers with regards to his career year. His year was a good one but wasn't way above the rate he has been producing at over the past few years. He had 78 pts in 82 games this year. The previous to full seasons he only played 74 game each but got 71 and 69 points. On the point-per-game basis it is pretty close, the difference in absolute numbers is he played 82 games.

It won't be that difficult for the Hawks to get under the cap but there will be a lot of turnover. They will need to clear around 8 mil in 2015 due to raises to 88, 19, and 20. Rosy and Oduya getting replaced by ELCs is going to save you a little under 4 mil. So depending on how much the cap goes up will determine what kind of cuts they need to make. I think they'll also replace Leddy and save more than a million. They could also go with a cheaper backup compared to Raanta's 1.4 that he made this season. Kruger will probably also be replaced by either Nordstrom, Danault, or McNeil. Everybody keeps highly rating the depth of the Hawks minor league system. Everyone will get to see that depth on display in 2015.

I read somewhere today of a rumour that there was a possibility of a Spezza for Sharp trade that was being batted around...

I would think that Bryan Murray would be looking for a little more than a straight swap. I think Spezza would make a great 2C in Chicago; however, his 7 million cap hit doesn't help the Hawks overly much.

Kesler to Chicago for Sharp could make sense though.

I hope not. We don't want Kesler. Don't trust his health.

why would he need more than sharp, if that was on the table?

I don't mind Spezza for Sharp.

Sharp had a horrible playoffs he looked like "Patrick Perimeter" out there, never wanting to get into traffic areas.
