Default Bruins dealt 4.75M penalty for Cap infraction

    http://www.bruinslife.com/2014/06/re...p-penalty.html

Although not official yet, the numbers are starting to trickle through the cracks in regards to the bonus penalties charged to the salary caps of the 30 NHL teams this off-season. And the Boston Bruins have the largest of them all.

According to the always trusty and super reliable capgeek.com, the Bruins have been docked $4.75 million against the cap this upcoming year for bonuses earned this past season from a number of players. Jarome Iginla is the leader of the pack, having earned a $3.75 million bonus after playing in more than 10 games, which seems odd with it being such a low number; why not more than 1/8 of the season? Why not 20, 30 or even half the season? But I digress.

According to CSNNE's Joe Haggerty Two of Boston's young defenseman, Torey Krug and Dougie Hamilton, earned $850,000 and $212,500, respectively, for their play this past season. Ryan Spooner was the other player to hit a bonus, earning $21,500 in extra dough.

When factoring in Marc Savard's $4.027 million to be used on long term injured reserve and an expected increase in the cap ceiling to be right around $71 million, the Bruins will have roughly $8 million in space to sign their numerous free agents, which include Iginla, Krug, Reilly Smith and potentially Matt Bartkowski, find possible replacements for the departed Shawn Thornton, as well as finding a new backup goalie behind Tuukka Rask.

The numbers to get everything on the checklist done simply will not add up as currently constituted for the B's. They know this, which is why they have already had to part ways with Thornton and have floated possible travel options to take when it comes to moving salaries on the team via trade. Brad Marchand ($4.5 million) and Johnny Boychuck ($3.6 million) have been the two most popular names that have come up as movable pieces to free up space.

Haggerty also notes that moving either Chris Kelly ($3 million) or Adam McQuaid ($1.56 million) could do the trick, but both players are coming off of serious injuries that derailed their seasons, so teams would have to take their salaries on as throw-ins to a bigger deal.

Whatever lies ahead, one things is certain: the Bruins have some serious work to do in the coming weeks to tweak and fiddle, or send a thundering shake up, to the roster.

bruins aren't gonna be a powerhouse next year. i have a feeling they will have to trade a D, most likely seidenberg/boychuk since they have a few cheap D that can play right now. chara will likely begin to slow down too, will be interesting to see what happens.

I think this isn't so much a penalty as a known loophole in the CBA. The word on the street is they're gonna do the exact same thing with Iginla this year, paying him mostly through 'bonuses' that won't count against the cap until the year after.
10 team pts-only keeper league - keep 10 plus 10 from past/present farm. No bench: entire active roster counts. Goalies: 2 pts/win + 3/shutout. 82 adds / year. NHL playoffs count for separate prize.

    D: A Fox, S Theodore, R Andersson, B Montour, S Durzi, D Keith
    G: F Andersen, S Knight, J Swayman

To be honest, the Bruins weren't a powerhouse this year either.. It's all about who gets hot in the playoffs..

Blues were a powerhouse and got exited round one. Im pretty sure the Bruins didn't 'luck'ed their way in top of eastern conf and round 2 of playoffs just because some guys were hot.

Needless to say this penalty will hurt, but i have a feeling iginla will stick around (this time), cause like chunkys choice said, im sure management has already found a loophole to play around.

This is not an infraction. Not a penalty at all. It's just deferred cap hit. Teams have been able to do that for as long as there has been a salary cap, with the exception of the last year before the latest CBA, because then they didn't know if they would have the same system in place before negotiations started.

    This is a common practice.

Yeah I was confused by calling it a penalty as well.

The Bruins should be fine, though they might need to shuffle off a few guys. Boychuk says he loves Edmonton and is there during the offseason. I'd imagine he'd rather stay in Boston and actually play meaningful hockey, but he might be the type of guy who gets shuffled off due to these type of cap considerations.

Teams always find a way to make this work without too much significant impact on the team. They usually have some players ready to step up and fill roles at lower costs that we don't know about. Chicago had similar trouble when they got their offers out late and ended up trading buff, ladd and versteeg, but they bounced back pretty easily. They'll find a way.

Could do what Philly did and just bounce up and down 4th line rookies so they don’t pass the 10 game limit on rookie contracts while paying a player the league minimum? That was during the old CBA tho, so that hole has prolly been filled. There’s always creative accounting for these guys to work with. However, maybe Subban comes up early for a backup role?

What players did they do that with? That could only happen with Europeans, because with Canadians the teams can't bounce them up and down between pro and junior and when they turn 20 the contract can't slide anymore anyway. As far as I know, the Flyers haven't had a bunch of players they do that with. They might have bounced guys up and down from AHL to NHL but that has had nothing to do with the 9 game max slide rule. Where did you get that idea?
