DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed forward Jamie McGinn to a two-year contract through the 2015-16 season.

McGinn, 25, recorded 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points in 79 games for the Avalanche this past season. The Fergus, Ontario native set career highs in points, assists, game-winning goals (3) and games played, while his 19 goals fell one short of his personal best (20 with Colorado/San Jose in 2011-12). He ranked fifth on the team in hits (140).

McGinn went on to finish fourth on the Avalanche in playoff scoring with five points (2g/3a) in seven postseason contests.

“Jamie is coming off a very good season and played an important role for our team,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic. “We’re excited to have him under contract for another two years.”

I was expecting around 2.5M per so this is a tad higher than I would have thought.

I'm guessing with what Killorn signed for that made the picture fairly clear, along with McGinn having more service time and scoring at the same pace. He had a good year and if there's truth to PAP moving on, keeping McGinn is something they needed to lock down. $2.95M per year is a touch high, but he's been effective wherever they put him, usually with Duchene.

I actually believe this deal bought one year of UFA. It depends if his rookie year counts as accrued season or not. He played 35 NHL-games that year (the limit is 40) but healthy scratches also count towards that limit. Not totally sure but I've read he could have become UFA next summer so he probably reached that limit in his rookie season which means this new contract bought one year of UFA-status.

Agreed it seems a bit high but makes sense if it bought a UFA year. Also gives him a nice vote of confidence basically choosing him over PAP.

Yeah that is why our trade talks went down the way they did. It's all in the details when balancing a budget.
