Default Red Wings cutting ties with Bertuzzi & Samuelsson

    http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2...zi-samuelsson/

Two of the most tenured Red Wings are on their way out.

On Wednesday, Detroit GM Ken Holland confirmed that pending UFA forwards Mikael Samuelsson and Todd Bertuzzi wouldn’t be brought back next year, per the Macomb Daily. Bertuzzi, 39, had nine goals and 16 points in 59 games last season — his fifth in Detroit — while Samuelsson, 37, had one goal and four points in 31 games during his second stint with the Wings (Samuelsson also played in Detroit from 2006-09).

The moves come on the same day that Detroit waived Jordin Tootoo for the purpose of using a compliance buyout on his contract. Tootoo, 31, signed with Detroit in June of ’12, inking a fairly lucrative three-year, $5.7 million deal. The former Nashville Predator never really seemed to fit with the Wings’ style of play and though he continued to showcase his trademark passion and energy, Tootoo always seemed like an odd fit on a puck-possession team. Last year he appeared in just 11 games for the Wings, registering one point.

When he’s bought out, Detroit will owe Tootoo $1.33 million over the next two seasons.

After the dust settles from these moves, the Wings will have $18 million in cap space with 18 players under contract. Unrestricted free agents Daniel Alfredsson, David Legwand, Dan Cleary, Kyle Quincey and Jonas Gustavsson will still need new deals, as will RFAs Danny DeKeyser, Riley Sheahan and Tomas Tatar.

They're trying to resign Cleary, clearly. Haven't you heard that from yesterday? It's baffling all of us.

Maybe they staged a "Hunger Games"-esque battle among the old bastards and Cleary won?

So is the end of Bertuzzi's NHL career? I can't see any other team willing to take a shot with him.

Not a shock, will be interesting to see if retirement is the next option or if they land somewhere.

I think Bertuzzi will find a home for one more season. Samuelsson, not so sure.

They may be tenured, but I still don't really consider them Red Wings...Bertuzzi still screams Canucks to me, and Samuelsson was all over the place

And if they re-sign Cleary, I'll have to remove Holland as my most admired GM

haha, yes i was baffled yesterday as to why detroit would want to keep cleary. i was then even more baffled when the next day we find out they are indeed smart enough to let bertuzzi and samuelsson go. why are they smart enough to let go of bert/samuelsson and not cleary? makes no sense. maybe cleary has dirt on ken holland or something hahaha

I guess the stage is set for the young guns to assume larger roles. Do the fantasy values of Nyqvist, Tatar and Jurco go up?

Fantasy values definitely go up...But don't forget about Stephen Weiss here. He barely even played last year and when he did he looked pretty out of place. However...I still see him getting the #2 centre spot to start out. The thing with Babcock is he\ll always find a spot on a Dats/Zb line for an Abdelkader type player (or just Abdelkader). But seriously the line of Tatar-Sheahan-Jurco was their best a lot of nights when they were fighting to get in.

Bottom line is they need to move some forwards....I love Darren Helm but would this be a time to move him for some defense while he still has some value? Or do they just accept that he, Datsyuk, Zberg, Alfie and Franzen will all miss 10-15 games and stockpile forwards?
