Default Montreal trades leblanc to anaheim

BY PAT HICKEY, THE GAZETTE JUNE 14, 2014
MONTREAL — The Canadiens gave up on Louis Leblanc a while ago, but they made it official Saturday.

General manager Marc Bergevin made his first public move of the off-season when he traded the rights to Leblanc, the team’s first-round draft choice (18th overall) in 2009, to the Anaheim Ducks for a conditional fifth-round draft choice in 2015.

It is a case of getting something for nothing. Leblanc is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 after his entry-level contract expired and the Canadiens had already decided not to offer him a new deal.

Why would Anaheim do this? Why not just wait till July 1 ?

The simple reason for Anaheim to do this is because they can still qualify him and he would not become a UFA. He was only going to be a UFA because Montreal was not giving him a qualifying offer.

I get the logistics in being able to give Leblanc an offer an keep him from becoming a UFA, but I think the "why?" means more like: Why would Anaheim, with a large stable of young prospects already, make this move to get an underachiever like Leblanc?

That doesn't make sense to me either, unless they know they can flip him or another prospect for someone they really want.

Seems to me that Anaheim is going to make a play for a big time forward this summer, so stockpiling youngsters isn't a horrible idea..

A conditional 5th rounder is virtually worthless. So if Anaheim thinks Leblanc can fill a role, even at the AHL level, it`s likely more than worth the price they paid.

If they think he's good enough to be an NHL call-up, he's prob worth a 5th, especially if they're going to be losing a few roster forwards to FA, retirement, and trade.

Anaheim made a similar deal a couple years ago with a former Habs first round pick who didn't pan out in MTL : Kyle Chipchura.

Agree with this, and what do they have to lose, he may develop better playing with Anaheim's prospects.

Maybe Anaheim has a player or coach with a connection to Leblanc who recommended this trade. If they could make Cogliano an important part of their roster, I would not see why they can't do the same with Leblanc, if of course he makes they roster within the next couple years.

i don't see the similarity. Cogs was an nhl player.

This trade is really just for their farm team IMO.
