Max term should be three years if a team is thinking straight. Then again, Vancouver signed Torts to a five year deal.............
No cap penalties for firing a coach mid-contract. It costs the owner more but beyond that circle it's not overly relevant. I don't think the Molsons would have a problem moving on to a new coach when change is needed.

meh, I don't love the guy but it could be worse...if he doesn't work out they can always fire him in a couple years, it's not like the Habs are hurting for cash

if he gets fired midway through the extension he would probably be hired by another team within 6 months
so no real big hit financially because new team picks up the remaining salary (I could be mistaken though )
