I cant decide whether I think the Wings buyout Weiss or not. Im of the mind to give him another shot but since this is the last year to do they might take the chance now in case he can't turn it around.

    Havlat.
    Ryan Malone.
    Brad Richards.

Havlat & Malone are prime candidates because both teams, IMO, would love to clear one-year of cap space to settle in for UFA planning.
B-Rich... I just think NYR has much better candidates to spend money on.

I'm not sold Leino will get bought-out.
Is it a terrible contract... yes?
But BUF still has to reach the cap floor and they are NOWHERE near it unless they plan on overpaying some other guys?
Why cut one overpaid player just to overpay a bunch of other players?

Its funny you mention his name because he was a consideration to me as well. I dont think they will buy him out but man talk about a bad deal.

heard Bob McKenzie on morning radio today say that he thought Buffalo would use a regular buyout on Leino, as opposed to a compliance buyout, so that they could get rid of him and use the buyout to get to the cap floor. He talked about their being a discrepancy between cap spending teams who need to get rid of back contracts using compliance buyouts while budget teams might use non-compliance buyouts.

I don't understand why you cut my quote the way you did.
I wasn't talking about Havlat... I was talking about Leino.

They can't buy him out because he was signed after the new CBA wasn't he?

Yes, that is what I meant to say. I thought we were talking compliance here, but I suppose that is an assumption that shouldn't have been made.

Cole would be my top choice. One year, $4.5 million, healthy scratch in the playoffs, no trade clause.

Honestly why bother? He doesn't have an NTC, and he's got one year left only. Dallas is not near the cap limit, they have no major RFA's to sign, at least not ones that will cost them an arm and a leg, and Cole's contract isn't totally onerous.

I'd rather take a chance on him restoring some small value to the team or becoming a half decent trade deadline asset then waste money on buying him out.

Weiss might not even be healthy to start the season, so he ain't getting bought out -- that and he couldn't get a compliance buyout.
I still think he could be a sneaky producer once healthy. Read an article where he admitted being unhealthy from the get-go last year and trying to play through it. Ended up hurting himself worse. If he can get healthy, I think he could be a bounce-back candidate (50 points or so).

According to Capgeek, he does have a no trade clause (http://capgeek.com/stars).

Truthfully, hardly anyone is is near the cap limit. Only the Flyers, Hawks and Bruins are within $10 million. Seventeen teams have more than $20 million in cap space. So really, very few teams need to use a compliance buyout.

The Stars are one of those. But under your logic, there was no need for them to buy out Rome either, who had just one year left and had a cap hit of just $1.5 million.

I just don't see Cole fitting into their plans. Like I said, he was a healthy scratch in the playoffs. He's scored 20 goals and 42 points in the last 122 games.

Right now, the Stars have Seguin, Horcoff, Benn, Peverly, Garbutt, Nich, Chiasson, Sceviour signed for next season, and will probably re-sign Eakin and Roussel. That's 10 guys there. Maybe Fiddler re-signs or they add another couple of free agents.

Why not get rid of Cole (who hasn't been the same since the lockout, and even admitted that he enjoyed staying home with his kids and was thinking of retiring), and use that spot for someone cheaper who wants to play and can bring more to the table?
