DETROIT – Tomas Nosek was a late-blooming Czech forward who slipped through the cracks at the 2011 NHL entry draft.

The Detroit Red Wings had their sights set on him three years ago, and their European scouts continued to monitor his progress.

Pleased with his development in the Czech league, the Red Wings are on the verge of signing the free-agent Nosek to a two-year entry-level contract.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound center/left wing (left-handed shooter) will compete for a roster spot in training camp. If he doesn't earn it, he'll play for the Grand Rapids Griffins. He turns 22 on Sept. 1.

Red Wings assistant general manager Ryan Martin said 6-8 NHL teams were pursuing Nosek, who had 19 goals and 44 points in 52 games for HC Pardubice in the Czech league.

Red Wings European scouts Vladimir Havluj and Ari Vouri are high on Nosek. Jiri Fischer, Detroit's director of player development, said, "I'm really excited about him."

Nosek played on the 2012 Czech World Junior team that Fischer helped coach as an assistant.

"He's a very smart two-way center who can play the wing," Fischer said. "He's very responsible defensively, makes good plays. He's more of a playmaker than a natural finisher. He just gets better every year."

Fischer said Nosek was Pardubice's best player.

"He'll have to get stronger, work on his skating," Fischer said. "He is a hard worker."

Nosek's agent, Ales Volek, also represents Red Wings forward Tomas Jurco. Volek liked how Grand Rapids Griffins coach Jeff Blashill helped develop Jurco, which aided the Red Wings in their efforts to land Nosek.

The Red Wings are hoping Nosek can attend development camp next month in Traverse City to get acclimated to the organization.

    Thought this was interesting-

During discussions at these peak hours, according to Hockej.cz, they're heading toward the goal. Unless something unexpected happens, the Pardubice talent will sign an entry-level deal with Detroit and the NHL and Czech Ice Hockey Federation will approve it so [Nosek] can go to the famous league. In this regard, the June 15th deadline is important. If the transaction doesn't take place by Sunday, the NHL team would have to pay a much higher compensation [iSport reports that it's a $240,000 penalty]. In the case of any contract, Nosek would attend training camp and his performance would determine whether he starts with the NHL team [or on the AHL team].

Is the June 15th deadline imposed for all Euro imports or just on certain leagues?

I can't help but notice that we still haven't heard of a Jiri Sekac signing, despite his "numerous" offers.

Why do guys like this sign with Detroit when they could sign with lesser teams and guarantee themselves an NHL roster spot and more money.

If you read the story on this link, there seemed to be a relationship established already. Nosek's agent, Ales Volek, also played a role in swaying him to Detroit.

    Some reports from development camp:

82 Tomas Nosek: When Nosek is in tight, he gets Datsyuk hands around the net, and that's both intriguing and frightening. Nosek's listed at 6'2" and 201 pounds, he was in the top-10 in the Czech Extraliga in scoring, and he's all arms and legs and superb skating and excellent passing, but coming over from Europe and being uncomfortable with the language and the rink...We're going to have to watch him play in the AHL and acclimate to a whole new lifestyle. He's 21 going on 22. Give him some time and he's highly likely to fulfill at least a good chunk of his, "Rich Man's Tomas Kopecky" promise.

82 Tomas Nosek: The gangly Czech has Datsyuk hands from time to time and you get excited because he skates so very well and because he's got skill, but he's got to figure out this whole being in North America thing, never mind the North American game.

I thought Sekac had already signed with Montreal? Like two weeks ago. There's an article on TSN stating how he hopes to crack their opening day roster.

Keep in mind that the guy who writes those reports, George Malik, is a HUUUUUUUGE Wings homer. He loves every prospect, pretty much. So when he says Datsyuk hands, take that with a truckload of salt. Malik has never been very good at identifying talent. Good to get an overview, but he's had very many misses in the past.

Another article from development camp written by Peter Fish, octopusthrower.com-

Tomas Nosek signed with the Detroit Red Wings on June 14th, a couple weeks before the 2014 NHL Draft, out of the Czech League.

Not only does Nosek have to adapt to a different style of hockey with the Detroit Red Wings/Grand Rapids Griffins, but he is adapting to a new language, as well. Nosek has a decent vocabulary, but keep in mind he is speaking a second language.

Nosek does have limited experience on a North American ice surface by playing in the World Junior Championships in Canada, but is still adjusting to working on a smaller ice surface.

When asked about the difference between the styles of International Hockey and North American Hockey Nosek said:

“Big difference… there is so much more hits and other training practice in fitness or on the ice and high intensity, so it is different.”

Nosek played in the Czech League, which is miles behind the, KHL, Swedish Hockey League, and Liiga and because of that Nosek might not be used to the quicker pace of CHL/AHL/NHL hockey.

In order to play in the AHL next season, Nosek will have to drop some of his Czech League tendencies he has developed. When heading down the ice, Nosek skated from the middle of the ice to the boards in order to try to pass a play with his speed, but since the ice surface is smaller he would get too close to boards and get walled off.

The good thing is he certainly did not look out-of-place on the ice, but I would expect that from the twenty-one year old center from the Czech Republic because most of the players on the nice were two to three years his junior.

Nosek has a good shot, a great eye for passing (a few of his passes made their way through a decent crowd of skates), and his speed is slightly deceptive because of his 6’2″ frame.

There is a lot to like about the young Czech player and if he can adapt to North American Hockey in the AHL with the Griffins and continue to develop we could see him in Detroit in a couple of years.
