Everyone likes to talk about how Trotz is such a hindrance to offensive production. I view Trotz as a top Tier coach who will simply maximize the value out of the assets he has available to him. I fully expect the Capitals in the postseason next year and Backstrom will get his points.

You'd also have to factor in trade value and name power. And that tilts the scale back to Malkin. In the end, this is a game of assets

Easily Malkin. If you want more FOWs pick up a guy like Vermette.

Malkin over 82 games would have scored 440.75, whereas Backstrom scored 432.75. Backstrom has played under 90% of a season ONCE, he’s one reliable person to have on your team.

If you are concerned about Trotz implementing a more defensive system which would lower Backstrom’s value you wouldn’t be the 1st to question it. This groupd of people I think are wrong. Trotz is just a really good coach, who uses his players to their strengths, Nashville’s strengths just happened to be D and goalies. Kariya, Legwand, and a few others had 80 pt seasons for Nashville.

I’m on a more cautious side of top players, I rather guys who play 77+ games a yr. Malkin isn’t a guy for me unless I have other people to pick up the slack.

Personal preference on this one I’d say

Ya, you have to go with Malkin. As olympci2014 stated, over a full season, Malkin was on pace to outpoint Backstrom, and if Malkin goes off and has a monster season like he is capable of, he will far outpoint Backstrom. Go with Malkin.

Yeah, exactly. Let's not focus on little categories like FOWs that can be easily replaced in the draft or trade market. Malkin is clearly the superior player because his offensive upside is irreplaceable, while FOWs can be easily found in the draft or trade market.
