Default Sabres offering to "buy" 1st round pick

Bob McKenzie says the Sabres are in the market to buy 1st round picks:

    Check around the 8:30 mark.

McKenzie says assume that there is a team with a $5mil per year player on a multi-year contract.

They trade him to the Sabres along with a 1st round pick in exchange for Buffalo's 2nd round pick. Buffalo can choose to hold on to the player or use a compliance buy out.

According to McKenzie Tim Murray is shopping that option to any team interested.

this could be a really good deal for a contending team that wants to shed a bad contract.

Isn't that kind of circumventing the CBA?
Not in any direct way of course, but it seems against the spirit of it at least

None of the above, as it turns out. Burke was just working the system. The Leafs acquired Kolzig as part of a package deal (there were other minor pieces going each way) knowing full well he’d never play for them. But the injured goalie was still owed hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the Leafs agreed to write the checks if the Lightning threw in a fourth-round pick in the 2009 entry draft. In essence, Burke had bought a draft pick.

I'd call it clever asset management. It's not like they're getting rid of those contracts for free, right?

If it isn't AGAINST the rules, than it isn't cheating. Circumvention is just another word for outsmarting everyone else before they could circumvent you...

Exactly. The Leafs had a deal in place to buy out Lecavalier for the Lightning in exchange for a pick (unknown what it was) so the Lightning could sign Lecavalier again. It never made it past the league office, as they modified the rule to say that the player could not sign back with either of the two teams in that situation. Mind you this situation is different as the Lightning wanted to bring Lecavalier back, but it's similar, and I'm curious to see what Bettman would do if this situation arose.

Good move by Buffalo, if they can pull it off. They will then get a player who hopefully is motivated to get out of Buffalo, so plays well so they can trade him next year for another upgrade somewhere.

Which they don't need to worry about because the league will just change it's mind a couple seasons down the road anyways!

Interesting proposition by Buffalo to say the least. Hard to say what Bettman may do in a situation such as this, but, for Buffalo at least, it is hard to argue that they aren't trying to improve their team.

Assuming the league allows this to happen one team that should take a long look at it is the Rangers.
Their 1st rounder is going to be 29th overall and they only have 1 compliance buyout left.
They have Nash left at $7.8M for the next 4 seasons and Richards left at $6.7M for the next 6 seasons.
Ship off the Rangers 1st and Richards for the Sabres 4th (you'd have to do more than 1st for 2nd as the Rangers 1st is practically the Sabres 2nd). Dump Richards and buyout Nash.

Now you've bought yourself $14.5 million in cap-space and don't have a single really bad contract on the books. You have a great goalie, a solid D-core and some up and coming forwards coming off a Cup Final appearance. If you could sign some smart free agents you might be on to something.

Heck, couldn't they buy 2 picks and keep one contract to stay above the cap floor, that would give me a good chuckle.
