People forget quickly that Brodeur had a nice run to the 2012 SCF at age 40, just two years ago. A contender would be wise to take him as an insurance policy next year.

Schneider is a very good goalie and could be great, but has done nothing but choke in the playoffs up to this point. It's not a secret that Schneider won't sign an extension until NJ resolves the direction they are going in the Brodeur situation - which appears to be cutting ties to appease Schneider.

As for Brodeur as a goalie coach in NJ, can't see that happening at this point.

And look how quickly roloson went down hill after his trip to the cup final at a similiar age...

Comparing Roloson (one cup final) to Brodeur (five cup finals and arguably the greatest goalie ever) is like comparing Bubbles the Chimp to Donkey Kong.

Age doesn't differentiate when it impacts players abilities...

And roloson had substantially less miles on him than brodeur does at 42 so if you think back to back .901 save percentages is not showing signs of wear (wasn't the average around .914 this year?) I think there will be 30 GMs who will... I honestly don't see brodeur landing a job and definitely not a starter - if he does I will immediately make a $50 bet they won't make the play offs...

I agree he won't be a starter, have never once suggested that. I merely think a contender would be wise to sign him as a back up. If he's rested which he would be if playing just 20-30 games during the season as a back up, and come playoff time a team needs him due to an injury/slump to their starter - in that case Brodeur makes for a decent insurance policy.

See that's where I also disagree as after Schneider took over and Brodeur got back in he never look rested but rusty... Arguably the best goalie of his generation (I prefer Roy and Hasek has something to say about it) his generation has come to an end and I wish he wouldn't do what others have done and play one year too many - which this will be

Another season to pad his record stats while playing for a contender and making say 2 million - why wouldn't he play?

Because he won't pad his stats - what's 5-10 wins at most? He doesn't need the money - he'll probably get a good tv deal tbh and why tarnish the reputation

Totally different positions... Also aren't everyone on the other thread suggesting Richards should be bought out?

I think he'd rather play, he has the rest of his life to get a TV deal.

As for his reputation - when he is inducted into the Hall of Fame (as a Devil after he signs a one day contract to end his career), no one is going to care about the last season or two on another team.

Was Jordan's rep tarnished when he suited up for Washington - nah, most consider him the best basketball player to ever play regardless. Heck, you could even argue Gretzky hung on a year or two too long.

The same principle will be applied when reflecting on Brodeur as most will consider him the best or one of the best goalies of all time.

who cares if it's different positions, the point is not every player ages exactly the same

to suggest that time has the same effect on all players the same is ignoring the reality of what goes on

And his stats already indicate he has aged?

lets be honest if you had to order the 60+ goalies in the NHL where does he land for you for this coming season? You may take a punt as a 3rd goalie but not many pick him as their second choice and no one would pick him as their starter...

all of that is irrelevant to the statement you made saying that age does not differentiate

that statement is factually inaccurate and i was addressing that and only that with my remarks

if you want to argue that Marty is losing it then argue that Marty is losing it, don't argue that Marty is losing it because Dwayne lost it

that is not the correct argument to make for Marty and his future

Marty is getting older and performing less impressively than did when he was younger therefore implying age is impacting him.... Name one player who was better in his 40s than he was in his 30s or his 20s?
