Larsson isn’t planning to head overseas, but the Devils will lose two former highly-touted Swedish prospects to the KHL.
Right wing Mattias Tedenby, the Devils’ 2008 first-round draft choice, will play for Lev Praha in the KHL next season and defenseman Alexander Urbom, a 2009 third-round pick, will play for Severstal.
The Devils will maintain the NHL rights for both players, who were slated to become NHL restricted free agents, as long as they make the necessary qualifying offers to both players by the 5 p.m. June 30 deadline.
Urbom’s deal with Severstal is already done and Barry said Tedenby’s contract is “pretty much finalized” at this point. His KHL rights were traded from Atlant Mytishchi to Lev Praha earlier this week.
“He’s going to take a year over in Europe,” Barry said. “It’s a decision he wanted to take just to get things going. We just feel it’s probably better for him developmentally at this stage to go over there and play. He had some good offers and he’s going to take it for a year and see what we do from there.”
Tedenby, 24, played only 15 NHL games for the Devils in 2013-14 and had just one goal and no assists before clearing waivers and being sent down to Albany. He had nine goals and 13 assists in 42 AHL regular season games and added a goal and an assist in four playoff games for Albany.
Leaving to play in the KHL doesn’t necessarily mean Tedenby’s Devils’ or NHL career is over.
“We see this with Swedes and Czechs,” Barry said. “They kind of jump back and forth a bit. He’ll play in a different environment and he’ll be put in a big role and, obviously, they get paid well, too.”
Urbom, 23, rejoined the Devils’ organization on Jan. 8 after being reclaimed off waivers from the Washington Capitals. The Capitals had claimed Urbom off waivers from the Devils on Oct. 3. He ended up playing 20 games for the Capitals, registering one goal and one assist. The Devils sent him to Albany after reclaiming him and he struggled there at times in putting up one goal and 10 assists in 35 games.
