A bust a 21? Way too early to give up on this player. Maybe it turns out that he isn't a player cut in Burke's ideal mode, but he's got all the offensive tools to succeed.
Is he a bust? Will he break out and have a good season? Is a change of scenery possible? Will he live up to his potential and get good point totals? what are your opinions on this kid

I see Barts ultimately peaking as a 20-25 goal scorer and getting between 40-45 points a season. Sort of like a Mason Raymond this year with the Leafs.

I still like Baertschi as a talent, too. What concerns me most and hasn't been mentioned yet are his injuries though. He has been injured a lot already, last time at the start of the World Championships - I just wonder if this is harming his development… A change of scenery would probably do him good - maybe Fla as part of a package for that 1st overall?

Patience is the key here as he is still learning the pro game and the mental toughness that is needed at that level.
He wasn't helped by the strong showing in 5 games at the end of 2012/13, everyone expected him to come in this season and run away with the Calder but it didn't happen that way. He was getting knocked big time for his play in the early part of the season, moved up and down the line and finally stamped on by Burke when he arrived. They did the sensible thing and sent him down to Abbortsford where he has been gaining his confidence back and growing into the game. He is no different from the vast majority of prospects that need to spend time in the AHL first before making the jump to the show.
He still has the talent, you just need to be patient.

Like UKFlames said, his biggest issue so far at the pro level has been mental toughness. The 5 game outburst to start his career actually did a lot of harm. Fans let expectations get too high, and Baertschi kind of let it go to his head. It hurt his development. Sending him back down the the AHL sort of smacked his ass a little but he had to figure out how to fight through adversity.
This past season he started out slowly. Once he was sent down in December by Burke (after he took over), he put up 5 point in his first 16 games. He had to deal with disappointment and how to be professional in that kind of situation. In February though, he started to figure it all out putting up 4 goals and 8 points in 11 games. He then kind of caught fire and put up 7 goals and 16 points in his final 14 points of the season. He only had 1 point in 4 AHL games but the entire Abbotsford team shit the bed in that series.
Baerstchi ended the season playing well. He's getting proper development from the Flames and you just need to have patience. He'll make the team this year if he EARNS it, a very Burkian philosophy, which Hartley pretty much embodies in his coaching style. He was looking very good at the AHL level, and with the focus on teh game, he'll be ready to compete for a spot in 2014-2015 with a new mental toughness. It's very similar to the Kadri situation in Toronto, minus getting jerked around because our idiot coaches wouldn't play him when he was ready for a spot. He has the talent to be a 60 point winger in the coming years.
It's possible he is traded though, but I think it's unlikely. Burke is no longer in charge so you can't go claiming "he's not a Burke player", and while the LW is pretty jam packed in Calgary, it's not a bad thing to make him earn it or have both him and Gaudreau earn spots and necessitate a move from someone else on the roster.
Just patience, that's really all you need.

Ya, way too early to give up on him. He was, what? A 14th overall pick? Guys drafted in that range are not expected to jump right into the NHL and be stars otherwise they would have been taken a lot earlier. He's developing, like 99% of prospects have to do. Good point made about his couple big outbursts maybe raising his stock a little too much....the 5 game emergency callup in 2012, and then the 9 points in 7 game stretch to end 2013. He was getting his tires pumped something fierce on these boards due to that 7 game stretch.
Give him time, have some patience. Still lot's of talent, just needs to come into camp this fall ready to compete for his spot and then make some waves once given the opportunity.
