If you need to cut salary, you should cut one of your expensive crappy players instead of James Neal. Start with your most overpaid defenceman and then look at your forwards with the higher salary and lower production. Might be better off just dropping one or two of those guys than trading a stud forward.

I'd need more information on the league for making a call here but things to consider:

    1. Is Neal overpriced?
    2. How important are Dmen? (Voynov)
    3. Who is available at that #6?
    4. How deep is your league?

At first glance however, if you have to cut cash, you could do a lot worse. Neal has been unpredictable lately. Wilson has a new offensive coach. Coyle is on the rise. That #6 sounds pretty high.

    Voynov is on bench.

    cat G = 1 pt and A = 1 pts. That's it!!

The #6 guys like Poirier, A. Lee

You would be crazy to trade James Neal for a rookie (Coyle) + 40 pt forward on defensive team (Wilson) + average prospect (6th overall) for the sake of a salary dump. I would drop Voynov or some other high salary outright before I give up Neal for that return. If you include the rest of your roster on your signature, we can tell you exactly which over priced player you should get rid of on your team. If the best prospect you can get is someone like Poirier and Lee, then this offer is downright horrible.

Neal is one of the best players to own in a cap league. The points he puts up for a $5 mil salary is unmatched. What a horrible offer. Listen to gainerama here and find another solution to cut salary.

In points-only salary, my rule of thumb is 10pts/$1m.
That's a benchmark that you should be striving for.

The typical NHL player is right around there.
    A $10m Crosby should get you 100pts.
    A $5m Forward should get you 50pts.

The theory for winning these leagues goes like this:
    1. Where is the best BANG-for-your-BUCK? Usually, there are $1m or $2m players that can put up 40pts. It starts there. And yes, Coyle fits Step#1 beautifully!!!
    2. Divide your total team salary by positions and then pair them up. For example, if you have $80m for 20slots, that's $4m per slot... or $8m per 2 slots.
    3. Pair the BANG-BUCK player with a high-priced player to get maximum return.

    For example:
    $2m player scoring 45pts +
    $6m player scoring 60pts

That would give you a better return than:
    $4m player scoring 50pts +
    $4m player scoring 50pts

With James Neal... gosh, that's a $5m player capable of posting 70pts.
You could pair him with another $3m player that might get 45-50pts.
    That's 115-120pts.

Anyways - that's the theory behind winning salary points pools.
I fully understand the value of Charlie Coyle (for these reasons).
Coyle could very well be a 50pt player next year at a $0.9m salary.
    If you have a 70p player at $7m (Sedin?), there's your 120pts in $8m.

It might exceed Neal + Somebody.

    But it's always a 2-for-2 in salary pools... apples-for-apples.
So the bigger equation you should post, for us to rate is this:

    Coyle ($1m) + PlayerX ($_m) = SAME TOTAL
    vs.
    Neal ($5m) + PlayerY ($_m) = SAME TOTAL

That's what you (& we) really need to evaluate to make a decision on this trade.

We really need to see who your top 5-7 high priced players are and who's on your bench.

Do not make this deal. Neal is the type of guy that is great in a salary cap league, especially with a guy like Pomminville getting paid 600K more with less production. Look to trade Pommer if you need to cut salary. I would also explore trading Vanek because he will likely get a ridiculous $7-$8 per year contract which he is definitely not worth. Although after these playoffs and all the negative Vanek talk it might be a bad time to deal him.

Divide Neal's goals by his salary, then compare it other players on your team. What does the data crunch tell you ?

Also I have learned to NEVER NEVER NEVER force a deal

Pomminville and Vanek will have takers just not right now so why take the "best" offer at present ? You have all Summer to work on a better deal
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.

Ya it would probably be tough to try and trade Vanek right now but I agree with donpaulo, that doesn't mean you should try and force a trade. Let the summer play out, who knows what can change by the time your draft comes along. The other GM's probably know you are trying to unload salary and trying to win over on a deal with you, that is what this Neal deal looks like to me. Anyway, someone should become interested in Pomminville. He had a nice 30-30 season this year.
