Default Callahan - Where does he land?

Any thoughts on which team Ryan Callahan signs with? The Leafs should have waited a year and picked up Callahan rather than Clarkson...

Considering what they gave up for him, I can't imagine the Lightning doing anything but their best to re-sign him. I'd be surprised if he goes anywhere else.

    The Minnesota Wild.
    Perfect Fit.

    1. Team USA. Callahan & Ryan Suter & Zach Parise have been playing on USA teams back to 2005. (Suter & Parise go back to 2002)
    2. Look at MIN's current cap situation. Assuming Cap rises to $71.1m, Min has $48.4m dedicated to 17 players (9F/6D/2G). This means they still need 5F/1D.
$23m for 6 players - that's pretty good space!!!. They can offer Callahan $6m and still have $17m for 5 players!
    3. The gritty RWer.

    Parise - M.Koivu/Granlund - ______
    Coyle - M.Koivu/Granlund - Pominville
Callahan fits perfectly on the off-wing to Parise (or Pominville).

I still believe that Minnesota is going to make a MAJOR run at Thomas Vanek (former Gopher who had NCAA rivalry with Parise & former teammate of Pom).
But I think Callahan would be a fantastic fall-back plan.

I don't think Tampa gave up much at all for Callahan. They got a 1st in 2015 and a 1st in 2014 (it became a 1st round when NYR made the conference finals). To get Callahan as a rental on top of that isn't bad return for St. Louis who demanded out anyway. Now those first round picks aren't likely to be world changers but Tampa showed this year what having a cupboard full of good prospects can mean for a club.

My best guesses are Columbus (has the cap space and he fits in with Dubinsky and other former Rangers) and the Ducks (great fit for their second line). My dark horse pick is the Devils ($17 million in cap space, and it seems like the type of signing Lou likes to do).

Vanek is a lock for Minnesota.

As long as we're throwing darts at where he lands, I'll pipe up with SJ.

    1) They have a vacated #1 RW spot from Burns returning to defense.
    2) They have some capspace from Boyle's expiring contract.
    3) They have a mandate for change.

Might make sense for Doug Wilson to take a shot at Callahan on July 1.

    +1. Good post (REP).
He's actually had some good chemistry with Joe Pavelski at US tournies.

SJ might revert their top line back to: Marleau-Thornton-Hertl
Which could allow a second line as: Couture/Pavelski + Callahan
Those would be two very solid lines.

    SJ is my 2nd likelihood.

I, for one, do NOT see Callahan fitting in Tampa Bay.
The team is just too young.
Callahan is a gritty-Northerner if I've ever seen one.
I can't see him signing anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon.

Answer: he will go to whoever pays him the most money. Probably Florida or New Jersey.

I could see Burke convincing him to come play in Calgary. He'd be a great teacher for the kids like Monahan, Baertschi, Gaudreau, 2014 5th overall, etc etc and obviously Burke has strong ties to USA Hockey.

My dark horse vote is the Dallas Stars. Their secondary scoring was seriously lacking (Seguin 84, Benn 79, Eakin 35 were the top 3 fwds) so i think they'll aggressively pursue Vanek/Callahan/Stastny. They have bad contracts (Horcoff,Gonchar,Cole) coming off the books next season so a long term contract doesn't hurt them.

SJ was a great call. I suppose it depends what they choose to do with Niemi/Stalock. After the Havlat buyout, they have approximately 16M.

Buffalo is one that pops up a lot just because he's from Rochester. Even though it's his hometown I think it would take a sizeable offer to get him to go there. Plus I doubt Buffalo wants to do anything to improve their outlook for next season.

FLA has a lot of money to spend and have been pretty vocal about wanting to make some splashes. Much like CGY, he'd be a great mentor for the kids.

Yikes! That could be a career ender. I just think he is the type of player that a contender would over pay for because of his tenacity and leadership. St. Louis? SJ? Colorado?

Another darkhorse and a real slap in the face to the Rangers would be the NYI...
They threw a lot of money at Vanek, but Callahan would be a better fit.
After Okposo, the right side is very weak on the Island.

San Jose would be a great landing spot, I also think he'll end up in NYI or NJ.
