Default Hoping to make a play for Tavares

    Team details in the sig.

Debating offering Jonathan Toews and Corey Perry for John Tavares. The team with Tavares has pretty awful keepers and would improve their top 6 even though they give up the best player.

Is this still too little? Would you just reject this if you had Tavares, would you accept it, or would you ask for something more? I figure its a longshot that he'd part with him, but Toews and Perry is at least a respectable offer IMO.

Apart from being a Tavares fan, I'm motivated to free up a keeper spot so I can retain Ben Bishop. As of right now I would keep Landeskog instead. My keepers would go from Stamkos-Perry-Hall-Toews-Landeskog-Quick to Stamkos-Tavares-Toews-Landeskog-Quick-Bishop

edit: this should have been posted in Trade discussion if mods wouldnt mind moving it

Tavares is great, but I would have to agree with the above, that the offer is a steep price to pay.

That's actually a good sign because it might mean I have the assets to get him. I will try to get him for less than Perry and Toews. Maybe Toews and someone else, perhaps Landeskog. But I know if I had Tavares I would be very loath to move him, even if I was offered two solid keepers.

I would consider offering either of those two guys and high end prospect or a mid level skater for Tavares but I wouldnt send both for him. Thats just too much.

True, but...its a keep 6 so its hard to get a superstar without overpaying a little (you want to condense your talent, not thin it out). We don't have a prospects system either. Does that change your opinion on the matter?

What does the other managers team look like? Could you get him to bite on Toews + Pominville/Hartnell?

I dont think Pominville or Hartnell would be keepers for him, so I doubt he takes that in a keep 6. It has to be keepers for keepers.

As you can see his goalie situation is weak. I have Smith and Bishop as moveable assets.

That's true. I will try to only move one of them plus some other parts. I just know that the price of getting Tavares, Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin types is incredibly high in a keep 6. I made very strong offers for all four this past season and nothing worked.

the problem is with hits pims and +/- not to mention position Perry and Tavares are probably about equal even with the point jump for Tavares and you are throwing Toews into the mix as well

Gotcha. I didn't see that. My bad.

Ya that changes things a bit and makes it a bit more challenging.\

I still wouldn't send Toews and Perry for him. No way I am sending two of my keepers for one of his. While owning Tavares would be nice, I think you take too big a hit here trying to get him by sending two of your keepers.

I think the only way I look at it is if I send him Toews and Perry and get back Tavares and possibly someone else on his roster that may not be a keeper for him but would be a keeper for you. Just a thought. If he doesnt have anything that fits that for you, I'd just keep what I have.

Okay, since Toews and Perry is too much (I knew it was too much, but I thought maybe it would be the only way to get the deal done), what should I offer?

The pieces I'm willing to part with who I think will be required to get something done:

Toews, Perry, M. Smith, Bishop, Landeskog
    Any picks in 2014
Any picks in 2015 aside from the first round (McDavid+Eichel year)

I would try Toews and Bishop first since the gm needs goalie help.

In the end if you had to give Toews and perry for Tavares I would do it. It's hard to get the top talent and sometimes you have to pay a premium to get them. Your other keepers are good enough to give up 2 players and have a lesser 6th keeper. If Tavares is a 90 pt player and Toews and Perry are both 75 point players, then assuming Hartnell becomes your 6th keeper you only lose out by 10 points. IMO that's worth it to acquire a top 5 asset.

Of course it depends on your situation, but as a tavares owner, i wouldn't move him for anybody other than crosby
