Thanks MounD - Let's say Tavares gets roughly 85 pts next year. 78th ranked forward has 51 pnts. 34 pnt difference.
    Let's say Karlsson get's 70 pts. 52 ranked D man got 29 points. 41 pnt difference.
Tells me Karlsson is "more valuable".

I don't technically need help at D. With my keeper core i can go into the draft and use my first couple round picks on defencemen. Really the only D-men that are being kept year to year are top ten.
Don't forget, that's only the mathematical measure of relative points-only value for your format. You have to factor personal bias into the mix, and it appears you are a huge Tavares fan. I would honestly call the difference between the two negligible enough that you can just flip a coin or decide in which position you are deepest. That's just the raw calculation, you need to choose what to do with it

Karlsson for me. I'm not in the camp that questions whether he can consistently put up these kind of points. If anything, people have been waiting for JT to break out for awhile now.

Tavares for me. Defense scoring is too unpredictable (yes, I understand just how good Karlsson is), and for that reason I would simply rather have a top tier forward than defenseman.

Be careful with this analysis. You are doing it correctly, but you need to develop a strong understanding of what you expect Tavares and Karlsson to consistently produce. I think 85 is a reasonable number for Tavares to put up year in year out, so I'm fine with that one. I have a hard time seeing Karlsson consistently producing 70 points and would be much more comfortable projecting him at a 55, maybe 60 point level. So to me, Tavares is still the best option with this analysis.

I see Karlsson as a lock for 65, I don’t get why people say they don’t like his possible inconsistency. 2/3 yrs he put up 70 points, and the odd yr out he put up 14pts in 17 games, with 60% of an achilles.

Tavares because he will have more overall impact. Who cares if Karlsson is the Crosby of D, Tavares is not even far behind Crosby himself. I don't get wrapped up in positional ranking when it comes to superstars like Tavares. Im just not sure why you'd want to trade away a higher impact guy just to know youve got the best Dman if it doesnt truly put you closer to winning.

Karlsson has cracked a 70 point season twice. Tavares but once. So in terms of winning, Karlsson is a step in the right direction.

Nor is Tavares close to Crosby's output. Can he? Potentially. But 'potentially' has been used for Tavares for some time in NYI.

    That's not a total picture of what Tavares has done. 5 seasons, 54, 67, 81, 47 in 49 and 66 in 59. If you pro-rate those #'s they're much better.

Islanders are also going in the right direction to attract potential FA. New building soon, great fans when they show up (they’ll show up to a winning squad), an elite in Tavares, Okposo by his side, new goalie, and a good group of young guns. Also with the contract given to Halak, I think Snow is even becoming a decent GM haha.

So Tavares will easily improve on those numbers, and has the talent to lock down 80pts a season. The big question is can Karlsson + “draft forward” out point Tavares + “draft defense”? I think Karlsson +forward will come out on top.

Completely agree. But if I'm a karlsson owner, I'm mentioning that point. Karlsson did it, whereas JT could have did it.

There is some weight to be given to players that hit those marks. Because ultimately your trading for talented guy who can do it, but doesn't have the stats to show yet, whereas Karlsson does (and we mark him as being inconsistent).

Ultimately, I don't think the difference between JT and Karlsson, positionally and otherwise, won't make you win or lose the league. Pretty even. But I would stick with Karlsson until I see him not look like a 70+ defencemen.

Tavares. Would always rather have elite Forwards over D. Even elite goalies over D. Forwards and Goalies accumulate the most points in your format.

Ottawa will never have success if karlsson doesn't become defensively responsible. He will drop in points because something has to give if they want to win. Tavares for sure.

He was just fine defensively in his Norris season. His points will stay the same, he is a generational dman.

bow I think it's close and wouldn't have a problem choosing Tavares. Karlsson is definitely a top 5 player in any format though
