    I...am your father.

    Default Panthers Fire Peter Horachek

They wouldn't do that, after waiting this long after the season, unless they had a new coach in the wings.

Any reputable coaches become available lately?

Not certain that it is because Trotz is available... but they do need to plant the seed.
With Washington freeing up, it means that the coaching carousel has begun - and any team that wants a new coach needs to make that position known.

I'd say the timing has more to do with the Washington vacancy being revealed.
(Not that Florida wants Oates... I'm not saying that... but there are "suitors" for different coaching positions now... so they need to join the fray before the pretty princess, Trotz, gets her mind set on one.)

i'd rather see trotz on a playoff bubble team. toronto is my preference of course, but i think the caps will desperately try to land him. in the end it's his decision...hopefully he doesn't want to deal with ovy and comes to toronto and isn't carlyle 2.0.

Not to nitpick, but wouldn't he be Wilson 3.0 since Carlyle is just Wilson 2.0?

I don't know too much about the coaching game but WASH strikes me as pretty much the absolute last place Trotz would be going. I get he has winning pedigree and done more with less than just about any other coach, ever but we all saw how a system that preaches defense and team play worked with Dale Hunter and the gang. Ovie came right and said he was not comfortable playing in Hunter's system so I can't imagine, especially with all the "OV to the KHL" talk that they're going to go out and hire a coach who is known for stifling offensive numbers and development. In my opinion, the Caps don't need better coaching, they need players with better character.

Trotz would be awesome in Florida. It's not just important to get a good coach but it has to be the right coach for the group of guys you have. Toronto is an example of the wrong coach for that roster.

I don't disagree but my perspective after hearing about Ovi's work ethic over the past few days this is what I think would be best for the Caps. Hire Gretzky and hire Keenan. Wayne comes with the pedigree that Ovi would listen to and Gretz would get a few Veteran champs in there to lead by example. Ovi would have no choice but to do everything properly and probably win the art ross. Keenan after coaching in Russia would be able to relate to Ovi better plus he's the perfect coach to come in and really maximize that group. The Caps would transform into an instant winner.

Am I a terrible person for hoping Trotz goes to Florida for the fantasy implications? I traded Huberdeau for Doughty a couple years ago in a "win now" move that worked for me, but I wouldn't be horribly upset if Trotz went to Florida and cut Hubsy's upside by 10-15 points.

I don't see why Trotz would sign up to coach Florida.
It's a team in a NASCAR town with insufficient funding to compete for a cup.
    Sound familar?

Just like an old free agent hockey player, I think he'll be looking for a team where he could possibly get a Stanley Cup.
It ain't happenin' in Florida any time soon... unless Scott Mellanby and the rats return.

This was sort of what I was thinking as well, and he's not exactly going to be kicking down doors looking for work. I'd guess he goes to a team that is willing to spend some money and has a roster that is closer to winning a cup.

Florida has already said they will be shelling out money.

Because spending money always works to improve a team under new ownership.

You specifically said "with insufficient funding to compete for a cup."

Nowhere did you mention how it is spent.

    Here's another question then.
Do you think Florida is really going to look to improve themselves a lot in the offseason?
A wise GM should be whispering in his owner's ear "Maybe we should wait another year to make a big improvement."

It's one thing for an owner to say he's going to do it... spend the money.
It's another thing to actually do it.
And it's an all-together different thing to do it wisely.

Florida is a long-term project for any coach.
Minimum 5-year project to make that a Cup contender.

Do you really think Trotz is up for a 5-year project?
Do you really think Florida is going to spend cap dollars THIS summer?

Give me an answer on each of those.
    For the record.

I would like to see Trotz in Vancouver. Lots of hometown connections, and the Canucks would be a much different experience than the Preds.
Unfortunately, that is likely to be too expensive of a move.
