Can it be the tandem coaching of Carlyle and Torts?

I don't think Salo should be on this team. The guy is still a valuable contributor on T-Bay. Same with Koivu on Anaheim. There's a difference between being washed up and simply being a decent player who happens to be older (look at Alfie and Teemu). I vote to remove both Salo and Koivu!

Here are my picks that haven't already been picked...

    Mike Ribeiro (replaces Koivu!)
    Martin Erat
    Hal Gill (replaces Salo!)

Ribeiro: I'd say more inconsistent than washed up.
    Erat: yep definitely
Gill: he was in the NHL this year? Really?

Ribeiro I'm not sure about though. I think his point production has more to do with Phoenix, his linemates, and that team's PP. I think he is still capable of his great numbers, it just won't happen though given the team. Not sure if it's a matter of consistency though (and as you said, I wouldn't say "washed up"). The guy is a PP specialist, and if you leave washington for phoenix your numbers ain't gonna keep up.

yes we can change and swap all day long. You guys make the rules. Carlyle can be added as well.

    I'll update later.

Also, my question coming from all this is. WHY oh WHY do we keep seeing these bums rather than young kids who are hungry to play, perhaps inconsistent, but they want nothing more than be there. Wouldn't that bring excitement to hockey ?

Does RJ Umberger count? Was never a star per se. But had a few moments of respectable fantasy production
I once traded Henrik Lundqvist and Ilya Kovalchuk in return for Peter Budaj and Henrik Zetterberg… have lived in shame ever since.

    just my opinion anyway
I agree. They are washed up due to natural causes.

    Heatley is an obvious one.

Contract size/length, Size of the player (Douglas Murray...add Douglas Murray if you haven't), "Leadership qualities" and "character" are my bets to answer that.

Agree with dutch, wouldn't it be more exciting to have the young cheap salary cap friendly guys play than the over the hillers. some of that comes from some of those long term inflated contracts.

It's called paying your dues.....the older players helped build the game (and salaries) for the new guys. The NHL is a union environment where seniority counts, and you don't just push out all the old players for fresh blood, it's not that simple. Veteran players hold a lot of respect in the NHL.

Because you know what you're getting with the older guys. You've seen them in clutch situations, playoffs, down one late in a game, etc. You know what they can do, what they have done, and hope they can do it again. The young guys, you're never quite sure about.

sorry but that is the myth of the veteran presence

the reality is that 9 out of 10 times they get the big payday and mail it in for the rest of their careers

or people extrapolate a single play to mean every time when sometimes a once in a lifetime play is just that once in a lifetime

trust me as a Ranger fan i have seen countless vets not live up to know what you are getting myth
