Agree on the Callahan comparison. Not that good, really effective third liners. Marginal top 6 players.

Stripping a guy of the captaincy is tough. At the very least they should ask him to relinquish it publicly so he and the team can save face. The only time I can think of where stripping a guy ever worked out was in San Jose with Marleau where he clearly hated having it.

Entirely possibly he is playing with an injury, but just as likely that he's not. He just isn't that good, and his new contract makes him basically untradeable (and can't be amnestied, guess they could do a regular buyout).

Doubt it would be Doughty though. They'd give it to Kopi, Doughty isn't even an A right now.

I disagree about Callahan, he's better than a 3rd line player. Talent alone, he's a 3rd liner maybe, but the combination of skill, hands, tenacity, speed, effort, physicality, and hockey smarts make him precisely the type of player any coach would covet in his top-6 to compliment the highly skilled players. He goes and gets the puck, creates space, turns it over on the fore-check, and is a beast in front of the net both at ES and on the PP. He plays hard and fair (he has ridiculously low penalty totals for the amount of hits he throws), and is a far more useful player than Brown IMO.

i am curious exactly why Callahan is not a top 6 forward, what is it that you need in order to be a top 6 forward

Looks like every hockeyplayer needs to be called out on a internet hockey forum once in a while to show he still has some value lol.

does on ice performance really justify losing captaincy? i understand you need to lead by example, but who knows, maybe brown is a leader in the lockeroom, maybe he's great at motivational speeches etc. he does well in the playoffs when it really matters, and the results speak for themselves. i doubt he ever loses captaincy unless he is traded or kings miss the playoffs.

I'm not sure if I should send Dutch positive or negative rep for this thread. LOL.

I'd also reserve judgment until the end of the year (I'd like to know if Brown if playing through an injury). It could be a Bobby Ryan type situation.

Even in last night's game, half the time he touches the puck it goes awry.

But he made up for it with a great play on the 4-4 tying goal.

I can't help but think Brown is a massive buy-low candidate right now. In a lot of leagues he won't even be kept after the rough performance this season, and going into drafts next season he will be chronically undervalued. I'll be going into next season expecting: 40+ points, 50+ PIM, 200+ SOG, 200-ish Hits.

I don't know if it's full on panic time here.

Re: panic - I think it depends on the league. His salary takes a major increase next year, so in cap leagues, there is a lot more to worry about.

It's a lot easier to gamble on him if you don't have to consider his salary...

I have him in 2 H2H cap leagues and I'll be letting him go. His numbers may rebound a bit but his salary next year won't make it worth it. At $5.875M I would want him to a solid 50+pt, 50+PIM, 250SOG, 275+hits.

Brown is a heart and soul captain and is perfect for the team.

Kopitar would be a great captain, but keeping the pressure of the "C" away from your best forward and defensive stalwart is wise IMO.

The team as a whole is better with the current captaincy set up.

Callahan should fetch 5.75m to 6.25m/year, IMO he's over rated offensively but brings so many intangibles and could push a team that is currently bordering as a contender.........
