Default Keep 7 - Ryan Johansen vs. Eric Staal

    Keep 7
    G, A, PPP, +-, HIT, PIM // W, GAA, SV%

    Keeprs are:
    Malkin
    Giroux
    Karlsson
    Ryan Miller
    Kessel
    Backes

for 7th I am deciding between Ryan Johansen vs Eric Staal.

Johansen has more goals, hits, and better +-. However, Eric Staal has a good history of putting up 70 point seasons pretty consistently and getting decent PIM's for an offensive guy. Johansen will be 22, Staal will be 30.
Since it's only a keep 7, this is pretty much about who will have the better year next year.

    Other info:
    - Staal PDO 981
    - Staal SH% 9.1
    - Johansen PDO 1011
    - Johansen SH% 13.9

    I choose RJ here.

RJ will score more, hit more and be comparable in Pims. I view the two of them basically very close together value-wise and RJ is 8 years younger. Right now RJ is on the North side of his continued solid growth and Staal is starting to hit the South side of his. Staal is still solid, but being as close as I view them I go with RJ. He is still growing into his game and he's already producing very similiar numbers and in some of these cats , better numbers than Staal.

I say Staal. In a keep 7 there's lots of opportunities to acquire young talent in the draft. Staal is far and away more proven than RJ. This was an off year for Staal but if you take a look at his career stats its hard not to image him bouncing back.

Gotta love the year Johansen has put together, but i also think you have to side with Staal here.

Close one for sure, but put me down for RJ. This kid took a big step forward this year and will improve further next.

Staal in his 30s worries me...

Eric Staal is beginning his Vinny Lecavalier-like fade into mediocrity...Johansen has looked amazing this season. Staal might have some 65 pt seasons left in him but to me he's the "safe" choice here. Johansen breaking out this year on an upstart CBJ squad...Give me the upside of Johansen, I doubt Staal outproduces Johansen even once moving forward.

    who is your other goalie

i would have a real hard time with Miller as my only keeper goalie going into next season possibly making this a moot point depending on who your other goalie is

This is a tough one. You have the proven vs the up and coming. At what point does the proven start to slip a bit and at what point to you start to trust the up and coming?

For me, I am biting on the gamble and taking RyJo here!

I like Eric Staal, and I also like to gamble a bit too. Johansen is "up & coming" and should , at the very least, equal his output from this year. Staal could certainly bounce back, but he may also be on the downside of a great career and may continue to trend downwards. Staal also has to worry about some of the younger talent on the Hurricanes (most notably Elias Lindholm) taking some of his precious ice time from him as they begin to get their footing in the league. I vote for RJ in this case.

Anyone else worried about RyJo's shooting percentage & the fact that his previous 2 years were so bad compared to this year? Worried about him having a regression next year.

Staal however had a 9.1 shooting percentage which should go back up.

Put me down for Ryan Johansen. I find Staal way too inconsistent for my liking. You dont know if you are going to get a point per game player or a garbage player from year to year. I would rather put my money on an up and comer who has just proved that he can score in the NHL.

I have Staal in a couple of my leagues and I would trade him for Johansen in an instant.

I like Ryan Johansen here. I like Staal's track record, but I love RJ's upside. He's a special, smart player with many great years ahead of him.

I would go with Johansen - younger , upside - even though big fan of Staal.
    Option
Is there an option of trading Staal and one of your protectors for an upgrade, as Staal would have some big trade value. Target a manager who has some high end but not much depth.

Trading is closed. Still welcome opinions on this, seems like most are leaning towards Johansen but it's close.
