Vladimir Tretiak for sure. Paul Henderson at least in Canada and maybe Russia (lol). Bobby Clarke before Eric Lindros. Patrick Roy even over Plante? Ken Dryden? Mike Milbury for sure. I mean he can hurt fans, players and teams with equal impunity. Todd Bertuzzi? Think infamous, in the news.

It's different.... In Canada, ya someone like Jacque Plante will be known. In the US, people are gonna ask if that's the French guy that rode around in the submarine.

As far as the US goes.... Those first 4 from your list should be on there, but then it goes to more recent players. Crosby, Ovechkin, Ryan Miller, TJ Oshie, Pat Kane.... Pretty much whoever has done something memorable in the last couple Olympics.

Agreed, or as far as the USA goes, you have to default to a dynasty like the Islanders of the early 80s.

haha nice list. I had first read this last night so today I put it to test. I went to the grocery store earlier and asked the check out attendant if he ever heard of the name Jacques Plante, he looked at me like I had 3 heads.

As others have mentioned, it is different in the US than it is Canada. People just are not as hockey history educated in the US.

Probably the biggest thing to ever happen in US hockey history was the Miracle On Ice and I bet most Americans couldn't name 3 players off that team, let alone the star goalie. Hell they even made a movie about it, which was probably watched by many "non hockey" fans and I doubt the names sunk in.

    Canada has nuclear capabilities?

I don't disagree with the sentiment though

By nuke he means a strongly worded letter followed by an apology.

It depends entirely on where people are from. I just met some non-hockey fans from Slovakia, and they pretty much only knew Pavol Demitra...

Assuming we are talking about a "global" recognition where you simply asked people everywhere and tallied up names, I'd say:

    1. Wayne Gretzky
    2. Sidney Crosby (internet day & age, coverage is more plentiful & demographic of hockey fans is younger)
    3. Alexander Ovechkin (ditto)
    ...
    (drop-off)
    ...
    4. Bobby Orr (I actually think, due to recency of play - that more global fans would know Bobby Orr over Gordie Howe... I know... the "Mr. Hockey" thing... but everybody that knows of Howe knows of Orr, perhaps not vice-versa in the New England area.)
    5. Gordie Howe
    ...
(I think those are the only five that could be all recognized by the very slight hockey knowing person)
    ...
    6. Martin Brodeur (ALL new & old regular hockey fans know of Brodeur. He gets this position, like Crosby/Ovechkin due to recency of play, internet, hockey history)
    7. Mark Messier (same argument as Orr vs. Howe. All Lemieux fans know of Messier... but some Messier fans know only of Messier... New York broad-base)
    8. Mario Lemieux
    ...
    9. Patrick Roy (he would have similar base as Brodeur/Messier/Lemieux), but goalies are typically "lesser knowns", most because they generally get less face-time
    10. Jaromir Jagr (Jagr has played in almost every team in the Northeast of the US. Obviously Canadians know him, obviously Europeans know him... recent internet-age)

There are a TON, an absolute TON of phenomenal players from the previous eras... but anybody not named Orr & Howe is simply not commonly known among players under 25.
In my men's league, there are a shit load of kids joining in their young 20s... and these guys have no freakin clue who Richard, Hull, Lafleur & Esposito are.

    My ten.
