Default Who are the 10 players in hockey history...

... with the best chance of being known (by name) by the casual sports fan or average Joe? These are players who are perhaps sports legends, commercial enough, or have been marketed and talked about over the years or currently. My guesses would be (in order by name recognition):

    1. Wayne Gretzky
    2. "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe
    3. Bobby Orr
    4. Mario Lemieux
    5. Maurice "Rocket" Richard
    6. Sidney Crosby
    7. Eric Lindros
    8. Guy Lafleur
    9. Jacques Plante
    10. Bobby Hull

    What do you think?

While that is a list that I agree with... I just don't know. Canada, yes they will.. But in the us, that's a different story... I think 1 through 4 yes.. And Crosby yes, maybe even lindros.... But the rest, average joe, I do not know... In stl Bernie Ferderko would be on that list.

Yeah I'm not too sure about the US market. I dunno why but I think Roenick? Ha.

And maybe Ovy because of the Crosby v Ovy thing.

Messier is probably on that list. Maybe Jagr. Or even Cam Neely.

Messier has to make that list.

Yeah, Messier is a damn good one - I forget Moose. I'd probably put him 8th and bump down Lafleur and Plante, removing the Golden Jet.

Considering Lindros didn't make the Hall of Fame on his 1st ballot, I am not sure he can be considered one of the 10 best players of all time. Sure his name is known but that doesn't mean he is deserving.

Messier definitely needs to be on that list.
10 Team, Points Only, Cash League

Stamkos, Tavares, Eichel, Mercer, JRobertson, RThomas, Kucherov, Nugent-Hopkins, Tuch, KConnor, Necas, Point, Konecny, SJarvis, Cozenz, Morrissey, Bouchard, Josi, Novak, Tolvanen, Peterka, Brink

    G- Vasilevskiy, Sorokin, Oettinger

The question was about the best known players, not the best players.

Ovi does a lot of commercials so I'd put him on there for sure.

My bad, thanks for the clarity.

I still wouldnt consider Lindros as one of the best known NHL players out there to ever play the game. I am not even sure I would put Plante on that list.

Mark Messier for sure would be on my list and maybe even Domink Hasek.

I think Brett Hull would make the list over his dad.

Writer of the weekly Top 10 column.

12-team Keeper pool, straight points for forwards & dmen. Goalies get: 2 points per win, 3 per shutout, 1 point per assist & 1 point per shootout loss.

    League champ in 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020 and 2022.

Top 8 forwards, 5 dmen and 2 goalies count.

We keep 15 players (any position) plus two rookies.

Forwards: Panarin, Ovechkin, Kopitar, Stamkos, Tuch, Rust, Marchessault, Pavelski, Miller, Bertuzzi, Stone, Kakko, Brown, Stankoven, Kovalenko
Defence: Hedman, Fox, Matheson, Thrun, Jiricek
Goalies: Kochetkov, Talbot, Vasilevskiy, Campbell, Schmid

Messier, Ron Francis, Brodeur and Roy would be on my list light years ahead of Lindros.

I'd personally take Mike Bossy and Nicolas Lindstrom over Lindros and Crosby.
Problem with these lists is this......What is it based on? Cup Wins? Points Totals? Win/Loss totals? Hometown Allegiance?

It's more based on recognition, commercial exposure, drama, legend, folklore, press (good and bad), marketing, etc. For example. I know people who aren't baseball fans (I'm thinking about my in-laws) but they have heard of Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, Pete Rose, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Mickey Mantle, etc. just because their names have been referenced in the past or referred to in mainstream pop culture.

I agree with the point that the ONLY locks are probably:

    1. Wayne Gretzky (everyone's heard the name before just like Michael Jordan)
    2. Gordie Howe (sort of the Babe Ruth of hockey in terms of legend and name recognition)
    3. Bobby Orr (another classic name that people have heard, like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Mickey Mantle, Joe Montana, etc.)
    4. Mario Lemieux (a modern-day legend who also received much press for his cancer as well as coming out of retirement and owning the Penguins)

^ These are all names that are so known, they would even be used as Jeopardy questions. These are the locks that many average people, or casual sports fans, would have heard of and associate them with Hockey. After these guys, I think these others have a shot:

    5. Rocket Richard (simply has that classic sports nickname and legendary status that the name must have been referenced among sports circles at some point)
    6. Sidney Crosby (the most popular player today during the NHL's best marketing era ever)
    7. Eric Lindros (Drama, drama, drama. Between the "Lindros Trade" making sports news all across North America and the concussions/physical play, I think Lindros is a "familiar" name among casual fans)
    8. Mark Messier (another classic hockey name and one of the best players of his era. Also lead the biggest US market team to a Stanley Cup and received much exposure around that time)
    9. Guy Lafleur (maybe the most classic "hockey name" of all-time. "Guy Lafleur" just screams hockey and his flamboyant style and success made him a well-known legend in the sport of hockey)
    10. Jacques Plante (synonymous with the goalie mask. "Who invented the hockey mask?" is a sports question/story that has received much notoriety over the years. He may be known just for that)
    8-GM / WK-H2H
    Forwards: G=2, A=1, PP/SH= +1, GWG= +2, Shootout G=1, HT= +1
    D-Men/Captain: G=3/A=2
    Goalies: W=3, OTL=1, SO= +2, SV= .10

    Start = 13F, 6D, 2G / Keep 44 (3G)
    Captain: Matthews
(F): MacKinnon, Pasta, Marner, Rantanen, Malkin, Barkov, M.Tkachuk, W.Nylander, Pettersson, Gaudreau, Laine, Keller, Miller, B.Tkachuk, Stutzle, DeBrincat, L.Raymond, K.Johnson, Cozens, Quinn, Guenther, Kulich, Cooley
