Default A revisit of the old "number of goalies played in 1 season" conversation

I recall a conversation earlier in the season with regards to people thinking there's had been loads of goalies starting, and talk of a record number of goalies playing in the nhl this year. It was discovered at the time that it was more of a quality of backups playing that stood out rather the the volume of them.

well, this last week/10 days alone we've had at least another 4 or 5 new guys starting for their respective clubs.

John Curry starting today takes the number to 93. That's got to be close to the record...?? If anyone can find the record that'd be cool. I'm pretty sure it was in the low 90's.

Anyway, I find this stuff interesting,

It has fantasy implications too, it sure makes it less certain at draft time when to draft those mid tier goalies.... I personally don't usually bother with non tier 1 guys until mid to late rounds because of this exact reason... the amount of backups and young studs coming through these days that are getting a decent amount of game time is genuinely quite large.

I think metaldude had some stats on it, maybe for the ramblings? Not sure, but I think there was one season, maybe in 97, when it hit the 90s.

Just to add to this, doing some research on it.

The 03-04 season had 94 goalies. So still not a record this year.

Visentin today takes us to 95. So it's better than 03.

95 that's more than 3 per team on average. Was there THAT many injured goalies this year? Apparently so...

Nashville has used five different goalies. Edmonton has used six. Only Dubynk appeared for both teams, but between them that's 10 different goalies,

Between Connor Knapp last night and likely Cal Heeter today, you can add two more goalies to the total.
