Default Red Wings make Playoffs for 23rd Straight Year

With their win yesterday the Red Wings clinched a playoff spot for the 23rd straight season (not years screw you Gary Bettman). Since that time 9 franchises have joined the NHL. In that time they have 4 Stanley Cups the most of any team. They haven't drafted in the top-10 in forever and they still have one of the best pipelines of young talent of any NHL team. Now that's how you run an organization.
12 team H-2-H 1 year league, daily roster changes, 3 goalie start minimum/week
    2xC, 2xRW, 2xLW, 4xD, 3xUtil, 2xG, 5 Bench
G, A, P, PIM, PPP, SHP, GWG, SOG, Hits, W, SV%, GAA, SVs
    C: C. Keller, C. Mittelstadt, B. Nelson, R. Strome,
    LW: K. Connor, B. Tkachuk, J. Gaudreau, J. Marchessault, E. Rodrigues, A. Lafreniere
    RW: K. Fiala, J. Bratt, T. Jeannot V. Arvidsson
    D: R. Josi, J. Trouba, E. Gustafsson,
    G: L. Thompson, F. Gustavsson, V. Vanecek

And, impressively, they survived through one of the worst economic eras, locally (Detroit), of anywhere in the US in recent history.
Kudos to their ownership, management, coaches, and players.
THE model organization in Pro Hockey, IMO.

(ps. I will overlook the typo that the Wings actually "won" yesterday... I mean they were "winners" in a sense... I can let it go! )

They wouldn't have if they were in the West, so they are probably very happy to have made the move.

Also disagree slightly about them having one of the best pipelines. They have one type of player in their organization. This will not lead to playoff success in my opinion but we'll see what happens!

Since that type of player is "complete, skilled and good in all areas of the ice", I'm alright with that.

We'll let 23 years straight years of consistency be the response to that comment

Not going to get into an argument with a Wings fan but I completely disagree. Pulkinenn, Mantha, Jurco, Tatar, Frk, etc disagree.

Has nothing to do with their current set of players/prospects...

Maybe the Sens can look up to this model franchise and begin their own 23 consecutive post season births........starting next year!

They learn that in the AHL. Tatar is good in all three zones, Jurco too. Mantha and Pulkkinen will learn. Frk has been pretty meh all along. All of their D are good two-way guys and no forwards ever sniff the Red Wings roster if they can't hold their own defensively. So yeah, you're wrong.

This piece from the Hockey News puts it into persepective.

    • Gustav Nyquist was less than one year old. Today, he leads the Red Wings with 28 goals.

    • Wayne Gretzky had just completed a 40-goal, 142-point season in his second year with the Los Angeles Kings.

    • Teemu Selanne, who missed most of the season with a leg injury, had just finished scoring 12 points in 11 games with Jokerit. He would play two more seasons in Finland before coming over to play in the NHL with Winnipeg. Meanwhile, Jaromir Jagr scored 50 points in 51 games for Kladno in Czechoslovakia (yes, it was still called that) and would make his NHL debut the following season.

    • Alexander Mogilny had just completed his rookie NHL season and Martin Brodeur wouldn’t be drafted by New Jersey until after the playoffs.

    • The following players also made their debuts: Rob Ray, Donald Audette, Rob Blake, Andrew Cassels, Vyacheslav Fetisov, Curtis Joseph, Tie Domi, Igor Larionov and Olaf Kolzig.

    • Bernie Federko, Ron Greschner, Larry Playfair and Steve Ludzik played their last NHL games.

    • The Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup, their fifth in seven seasons (ya, it was that long ago). Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Justin Schultz and Nail Yakupov were not yet born.

    • Current Islanders coach Jack Capuano was traded by the Islanders to the Vancouver Canucks at the deadline.

    • The Berlin Wall had just recently started to be torn down.

    • Brian Mulroney was Prime Minister of Canada and George Bush the First was President of the United States.

    • Scotty Bowman was the director of player personnel for the Pittsburgh Penguins and wouldn’t become their coach for another season.

    • There had only been one volume of Don Cherry’s Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Hockey.

    • The Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Phoenix Coyotes and the current incarnation of the Winnipeg Jets, did not exist.

    • And finally, the last time the Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs, our editor in chief Jason Kay started his rookie season at THN.

Jurco and Tatar are only up because of the injuries. They got called up regardless of their defensive abilities. Mantha will never learn, that's not who he is. Pulkkinen as well. Will be in Europe in a year or two.

This team would get absolutely slaughtered in the West.

    Cheers
