Default Draft this Thursday -- 4th pick. Help. Rep for all!

    Yahoo 5x5 League. I've got 4th overall.
We protect one at each field position + 4RP and 2SP.
So the field we're drafting from is thin.

    I've currently got:
    1B Goldschmidt
    2B Gyorko
    3B Beltre
    SS Desmond
    C Santana
    OF D. Brown, Marte, Choo
SP Hamels, Gio Gonzalez, Greinke, Ryu
    RP Robertson, Grilli

With 4th overall, I'm struggling with taking best hitter available or best pitcher available. Here's the top few at each:

    A. Gonzalez (old, but solid)
    M. Rizzo (young, upside)
    Brantley
    Abreu
    Calhoun

    Wacha
    Tanaka
    S. Gray
Masterson (yeah...big drop after top few)
    Griffin
    Kluber

I'm leaning taking Wacha/Tanaka since Hamels is out for a bit and I NEED depth there.
Then, I'll hope there's a Util hitter in round 2.

If Tanaka and Wacha are gone, should I go Gray? Or Rizzo? Or Gonzalez?
If I miss out on pitching, I might be stuck with a weak #5.

Since you have a utility position to fill, A-gon would be a fantastic add. I love Wacha's potential, but just like Sonny Gray, we don't know if the short time we saw them last year is what they will produce over a full season. Masterson has been incredibly consistent over the last couple of years, and you could do far worse than him as a 5th starter. Rizzo has shown fantastic potential, but until he picks up his BA I would avoid him in 5x5's. I would rank it like this:

    Gonzalez
    Wacha
    Tanaka
    Masterson
    Gray

Yeah. A week ago, that was my thinking. Then I started looking at the available pitchers. Just worried that passing on one early will kill me.
If I pass on one at 4, I run the risk of Wacha/Tanaka/Gray/Masterson all being gone by my 2nd pick.
Thanks for the post -- still a bit nervous though...

    Hmmm....

    Others wanna voice here?

What are the next 10 pitchers available? I often wait on pitching because there are so many good options late...

Mlb pitching is super deep! I for one fill bats as soon as possible through drafts then worry about arms! Agon is a great pick there as Abreu might also be!

We all protected 4 SP -- so take out 48 SPs. Then, we have farms that included a lot of the youngsters.
Yahoo says the top ten available are:
    Wacha
    Tanaka
    Gray
    Santana
    Masterson
    Ross
    Linecum
    Haren
    Kluber
    Jimenez

I guess I'll see if A.Gonz falls to me. If so, I'll have to take him. The three teams ahead of me are terrible, so they might opt for younger players (Rizzo, Wacha, Tanaka, etc.).

If he's available I would probably take a flier on Tanaka or Wacha. Both bring a bit of uncertainty but I think both are worth the risk.

I like Ubaldo and Tyson Ross this year, and Lincecum showed some serious signs of a turnaround in the second half last year...all are very serviceable options as a 5 starter so I'd definitely opt for a bat first and a pitcher second.
