Some slightly riskier possibilities, as it could be another year:

    Charlie Coyle
    Nick Bjugstad
    Mika Zibanejad

Also think Nick Leddy might take a step next year.

A couple more that come to mind as possible breakout specials:

With the trade of Penner and Selanne retiring at the end of this year, both Silfverberg and Kyle Palmieri should both see a decent improvement in their icetime and stats next season. Also, I can see Sven Baertschi getting a fresh start in Calgary after spending most of this season in the AHL.

I think Cody Ceci has looked good during his time in Ottawa, but the real breakout year will almost certainly come next year. I also like Rielly in Toronto but think he may be another year away before we can say he breaks out.

Hubs, Yak, Coyle, Nyquist will all have solid seasons............. Yak will be on a new team.

Most 2nd year guys like Nikushkin, Kucherov, Barkov will probably endure sophomore slumps like Huberdeau and Yakupov have this season..

I think Bjugstad and Coyle could be a couple of good late round sleepers, compared to the others that will be drafted earlier.

I think Bjugstad is going to take a little bit longer, maybe a couple more years. Guys with his size usually take a bit longer getting used to using their frame and strength to dominate possession, and translating that into scoring. He's been great this year, and could end up as the Panthers' leading scorer; however, I think we should temper our expectations on the "breakout."

If Michalek isn't retained, Mike Hoffman could have plenty of opportunity.

I've been really curious about this guy. What's your take on his skills / upside / situation, etc.?

He's one of the fastest guys in the league and his shot is above average. Upside would be like a grabner or Hagelin IMO but no idea if he reaches that.

In terms of situation he would pretty much be gifted a top six spot if Michalek isn't re-signed, which I think is 50/50. Only competition would be like Matt Puempel who isn't ready.

I think Hoffman is a third line guy at best. He is only going to get that opportunity if the Sens don't replace Michalek which I find hard to believe. What is to stop them from trying to sign a UFA like Cammaleri or Moulson to fill the possible void left by Michalek? I guess it depends on what we mean by breakout year: 1) solid statistical output that the player will basically maintain for most of his career or 2) stay in the NHL year? Hard pressed to put Hoffman in category #1.

I feel the same way, though he is in a great spot where he can be insulated. I just can't recall the last guy to come over from Finland and have an immediate impact.

They can try but free agents rarely come here. And if they do it's usually the bargain variety. Which is why i think Michalek is resigned anyway, along with hemsky. Also if they miss the playoffs it will be even less enticing for free agents. It's more likely to keep guys you already have.

Hoffman is top 6 or bust kind of guy IMO. Let's say he got 40 points if he was given a top six spot, hypothetically. I think that's a breakout, but not in the same sense as somebody who has been playing for 3 years already and finally puts up big numbers.
