Has anyone heard how he's progressing from his broken heal? He's missed the whole season but I picked him up and stashed on my IR for next year so some positive news would probably force me to hang on to him when it comes time to set our rosters.

I wouldn't hold your breath. This type of injury doesn't have a great track rate in terms of players coming back from it. Lots of speculation that is career is done, and in this case I would treat it similar to Mattias Ohlund. No news probably isn't good news.

Huge injury risk + downward trend = probably not worth it.

Of course there's high risk, but in deep leagues where most good players are taken, these are the kind of guys that could pay off. I've got him on my dark horse list.

A couple of days after this thread was started, there was a bit of an update reported by Raleigh News & Observer:

    http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/03/...rally-for.html

"Note: Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen, in a statement released by the team, said he is making progress in recovering from a broken heel bone but can’t say when he will be able to return to hockey.

Pitkanen, 30, suffered a broken left calcaneus bone on April 2, 2013, against the Washington Capitals. He missed the remainder of the 2012-13 season and was ruled out of the 2013-14 season.

“I’ve been working with Raleigh Orthopaedic throughout this season with the hope of returning to play hockey,” Pitkanen sad. “There is no timetable as of now, but I’ve been making progress with my rehab and it remains my goal to resume my professional hockey career. It’s been frustrating to be away from the ice, but I want to thank all of the people who have expressed support throughout the season.”

Pitkanen has scored 57 goals and earned 225 assists in 535 career NHL regular-season games with Philadelphia, Edmonton and Carolina."

Elliotte Freidman reporting that Pitkanen still can't put his foot in his skate... Doesn't sound like he's making good progress

i would say LTIR until his contract is up (not sure when that is) just to get paid and it's not against the cap. He wasn't overally effective when he played last, and I don't think an NHL team would sign him after his contract is up. Maybe Europe is his next destinastion.

I think his career is over, just like that other guy in the 90s who had the same injury (crushed heel).

Yep, my guess is heading to Europe once he's ready, if he's ever ready.

The fact that he still can't put a skate on is a really bad sign! http://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/530086

He can take his time, rest up and heal. Maybe enjoy the season back home in Finland.

Then try and make a return for the 15-16 season. Some NHL team will give him a job
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.
