Nichushkin

Just offered Lupul and first round pick in this years draft for Nichushkin. I already have 2 first round picks(1,2 overall) and this pick could translate to 5-8 overall. Should I take this deal? My thoughts are Lupul is 30 now and that Nich is going to put up comparable points to Lupul for the next 2 years then surpass him from there. The GM who offered this has Seguin and wants the line combo. Any help?

The upcoming draft is pretty weak. In my opinion you won't find anyone with anywhere near Nich's updside at 5-8 (or 1-2 for that matter). Lupol is a massive band-aid boy and is no longer playing with Kessel, which is where a lot of his points were coming from earlier this year and last. This deal feels like giving up a dollar for a couple of 50 cent pieces. Also, your team is quite young and looks to be built to compete in a few years rather than next season, so why trade arguably your best prospect? Walk away.

This 100%. The 2014 draft class isn't great, and you're probably looking at a player like Ehlers / Perlini / Nylander with that 5-8 pick. For Nichushkin, I would want more than Lupul and one of these guys, despite Lupul being a serviceable multi-cat performer -- there is the injury history and lack of Kessel to consider, too. I like Lupul, just not for Nichushkin. And a mid-to-late first round pick in an average draft year isn't enough to put this one over the top.

Agreed on all, I guess ishould clarify that our pool classifies rookies are any player under 23 years old and not already claimed by a GM. But agreed, after essentially giving. Up on this year early to acquire pieces like Nich, Huberdeau, Bonino, etc, seems like a waste to trade away now for a guy like Lupul. With 6 picks in our rookie draft I'll be able to get 2-3 players way better than Lupul on way better contracts.

Yep. It sounds like you just answered your own question with the above analysis. If you just blew it up this season, it would be kinda silly to go after Lupul right now. Don't mortgage the future.
