Default Markus Granlund makes debut tonight

Markus Granlund has been called up by Calgary and will make his NHL debuttonoght. He should play with Westgarth and Byron. He's got 44 pts in 50 games this season in the AHL

Joni Ortio gets the start in nets with Ramo hurt. They are resting Reto Berra after returning from the Olympics.

I always love how they bring up a scoring machine from the AHL to play with the NHL scrubs.

Why dont they ever recall the minor league scrubs to play with the scrubs? They deserve a recall too!!

I still think its stupid to put someone, who has been doing nothing but playing top minutes and PP time in the minors, to come up and place them in a checking role and expect them to excel. Round peg, square hole.

I applaud the work that Granlund has done in the minors and definitely think he has earned a call to play in the bigs, but for the love of god, why do they keep recalling these kids, who are used to playing a scoring role, only to throw them totally out of their comfort zone and expect them to become a checker now.

This is Markus Granlund we're talking about, not Steven Stamkos. Just because they put him on the fourth line or third line doesn't mean they want him to check. It actually forces them to learn the two-way game to succeed in the NHL. If they can't show their worth and get better every game then they're not going to be an NHLer.

Stephane Da Costa did the same thing and he improved drastically in the NHL.

Just like the NHLers going to the Olympics. You must adapt.

Playing with Westgarth will also prevent him from getting killed out there as Markus is not as robust as Mikael. That said, it would be nice to see him move up the lineup quickly.

Im well aware of this, and I agree with most of your comments here. I just find it silly to bring up someone and throw him into a position in the lineup he's not comfortable playing. If your big league club needs a 3rd or 4th line skater, dont bring up a minor league 1st line skater and throw him in there. Bring up another grinder who is more accustomed to that role.

Prospect who has been climbing up the rankings over the past year or so. I've got high hopes for this kid, the lesser Granlund. Mikael's success probably motivates him to succeed even more.

I remember when the Flames drafted him he said "Whatever my brother can do, I can do it better!" Thats when I started liking this kid.

So far he's been pretty damn successful in the NHL. Points in three straight games now, with 3 points total in 5 games. Skating mostly in the ~16 minute range, solid ice-time all things considered. Do you guys feel like he's more suited to playing the Wing, or is he a candidate for Calgary's #2C gig long-term?
