Default Leafs sign Kessel to 8 year contract

According to TSN - average value of $8M per year with limited no trade.

Leafs had no choice but to do this and although the price looks high today I think in the long run it will be well worth it. Good move by Nonis to bring long-term stability to the team and remove all distractions heading into the season. At 26 years old I think Kessel is a true franchise player.

Most importantly, I just bought a Kessel Winter Classic jersey two weeks ago - best investment ever

Price isn't high. Thought Kessel wouldn't re-sign so I was wrong.

    Draft him a centre though.

Assuming the cap rises, this contract will probably be no problem.
They've got Lupul & JVR signed at pretty solid contracts... so they had the room and might as well use it.

I had no doubt he we would re-sign (otherwise I wouldn't have bought that jersey!).

If you had the chance to see him in person in Toronto you can tell he absolutely loves it here and he seems like the type of guy to stick with something once he gets comfortable. The Bozak signing was definitely a strong indication he would re-up... they did that contract for him more than Bozak.

Personally I think $8M is fair and may even look like a bargain in 3-4 years after inflation, but I'm sure many will disagree.

Mehhh...I'm a Leafs fan and all, but 8 mil seems just a bit high. I'd be happier with 7-7.5 If you gotta pay that much to hold on to him, I guess he's worth it then, right? I mean imagine the team without Phil That's not pretty.

Can't really fault this deal. Youngest FA headed into the summer. One of the top goal scorers in the league the past couple years to boot. With the new CBA moving forward, I expect these type of deals will be the new norm.

Sooooo glad they are locking him up long term. Guys who can pot 40 goals and end up top 10 in scoring don't grow on trees so you gotta keep em when you get them.

Yeah, it's market value for him (or slightly less).

There is some risk here with the contract, but I think Kessel should probably cover it. Leafs had no choice if they wanted to keep him anyways. Now the guys who were so sure he was leaving can go be wrong about something else

Now that would certify he was worth 8mil.

Hes a great player now. But I'll just go on imagining what he could be without Bozak passing him the puck!

8 for 8 sounds about right. I'm just happy this won't be a distraction leading into the season.

I was on the fence about Nonis this summer but lately I find myself engraving my name on my bandwagon seat!
