    Default H2H fantasy hockey format

    Hi everyone,

I'm new to head to head fantasy hockey. I know for the other leagues certain stats are weighted higher than others ( ie. goals > PIM). However, I'm not sure how to do pre calculations in a head to head format where all stats are more or less weighted the same (winning one category in the week only means winning 1pt).

I get to pick first overall. I hope I can get some insite and strategies as to how to win my league this year! =)

    My leauge format:

    - 8 teams

    - positions inlcude: C, C, LW, LW, RW, RW, D, D, D, D, Util, G, G, BN, BN, BN, BN, IR

    - Stats Include:
Forwards/ Defence: Goals (G), Assists (A), Plus/Minus (+/-), Penalty Minutes (PIM), Powerplay Points (PPP), Shots on Goal (SOG), Hits (HIT)

Goalies: Wins (W), Goals Against Average (GAA), Save Percentage (SV%), Shutouts (SHO)

I know I should pick Crosby with my first pick. After that I'm not sure if I should go after a goalie with my second pick etc.
    H2H: 8 Teams
Skaters: Goals (G), Assists (A), Plus/Minus (+/-), Penalty Minutes (PIM), Powerplay Points (PPP), Shots on Goal (SOG), Hits (HIT)

I believe the first 5 or 6 players should be elite forwards taken and then near the bottom of the first round, I'd take a stab at one of the top 2 goalies (Lundy or Rask) if the elite forwards are gone. I'd then try to load up on as many point per game forwards in the early rounds and maybe another good starting goalie somewhere in rounds 3-5. I usually don't even look at defence until later on and I mainly use my defence more for the dirty cats like hits, blks, pim. I save all my important rounds on forwards and goalies as they dictate the lion's share of scoring in most leagues.

Goalies are pretty dependent on when they actually start gettin g drafted. Dobber gave me some good advice and put the top 6 goalies (Rask, Lund, Quick, Crawford, Rinne, Howard) at the top of your draft list so you can see when they start going. If you took one of them with your second pick, but nobody else actually started going after them until the 4th or 5th round, then it may have been a waste. I would probably look for a top 6 goalie with my 4th pick or so then continue with forwards before grabbing the next G much later.

    1. In an 8-team league, where teams start 2G... there are only 16 goalies required.
The NHL has 30 #1 goalies, so there is plenty of goalies to go around. Draft your goalies very, very late... you can still get a Hiller/Pavelec. I even think, in an 8-team league, that you can draft Halak/Elliott back-to-back in rounds 8/9. St.Louis will be one of the better defensive-teams in the league and you'll get 82 games from their goalies one way or another this way. You can also look to draft Bernier/Reimer back-to-back around rounds 12/13. That's 82games from a defensively strong TOR team.

Most fantasy GMs want a bonafide #1 goalie in both their G slots. But drafting a tandem from a good team... and drafting them late is a good strategy.

Overall, goalie stats can change a LOT week-to-week depending on opponents of your goalies. Don't over invest in goalies in a H2H format where one bad match-up from a 1st round Lundqvist can cost you a week. It happens.

    2. Spend your first 7 rounds drafting SIX high quality forwards and ONE high quality defenseman.

    3. Late draft ONE defenseman that is going to get you a TON of HITS and some PIM.
Defensemen score a lot less than forwards, but you can still find a D late in a draft to provide HITS.
I would also look to draft one big HITS/PIM guy (Matt Martin, say) at the end of draft, just to stock those categories.
If this is a "daily" league, Anaheim players are good at Forward/Goalie because they play on off-nights and you'll rarely bench players if you draft one or two Anaheim players.

Here is a model for an 8-team league:
    Round 1: Crosby
    Round 2: Forward #2
    Round 3: Forward #3
    Round 4: Forward #4
    Round 5: Forward #5
Round 6: Elite multi-cat D-man (Suter/Weber/Byfuglien/Chara. One will be there)
    Round 7: Forward #6
    Round 8/9: STL duo (Halak/Elliott)
Round 10: Forward #7 (UTIL). *If Brent Burns is there, take him (ONLY if this is Yahoo!)
    Round 11: Forward #8 (Bench)
    Round 12/13: TOR duo (Reimer/Bernier)
    Round 14: Defense #2
    Round 15: Defense #3
Round 16: Defense #4 (BIG HIT guy)
    Round 17: Forward #9 (BIG HIT/PIM guy)

    9F/4D/4G
H2H leagues are typically won by dominating the "skater categories": G,A,+-,PPP,SOG. You can also stock HIT/PIM simply by drafting a dedicated goon D & F late... last two rounds.

    Good luck.
