Does Stepan think he can force the Rangers to shed some salary to free up Ryan McDonough type money?

They should have just bought out Richards and signed Stepan long-term....

So we go from Boedker to Stepan to Kadri with Richards thrown in haha.

Good deal for Phoenix here. Boedker has really been progressing nicely. I own him and excited for his breakout soon. (I hope)

Risky signing IMO. Boedker already had his bridge deal so this is a case where short-term deal doesn't make too much sense. Sure the cap hit and salary are very good for Phoenix and they have a possible bargain here but this contract allows Boedker to become UFA at the age of 25. If he breaks out during this contract, it will cost a lot to keep him and he may even want to test the market in that case. 4 or more years would have made more sense if Phoenix had a faith in Boedker's future. Would have cost more in that case but that's how the system works.

I understand what you are saying. But how many teams overpay based on projected talent, and then get burned. If there is any team out there that properly manages contracts, I'd have to say it's Phoenix. Pay the kid for what he has done, not what he may (or may not) do...

Phoenix is probably looking at the historical production of their forwards and thinking, "a breakout for this guy would be 60 pts max in our system." Therefore as a UFA at 25 he's still not going to get ridiculous money. He'd end up with a deal like Hudler last summer or Filpulla this year.

According to capgeek, Boedker remains a restricted free agent after this deal is up.

I guess his partial second and/or third year in NHL doesn't count towards UFA-status then. That takes the risk away from the deal and makes it a great deal for Coyotes.

I looked it up in the CBA. UFA requires 7 "accrued seasons". An an accrued season = 40 games played (games missed due to hockey related injury count, for up to two seasons).

Based on this, I think Boedker has 3 accrued seasons, and will have 5 at the end of this deal.

Accrued season seems to be 40 games on the active roster. Being a healthy scratch counts towards being on an active roster so it doesn't require actually playing those 40 games. It's enough if the player has been with the team for those 40 games. Boedker played 34 games in 2010-11 season. So you'd have to go and check if he was healthy scratch for 6 games during that year and if he was, then he has 6 accrued seasons after this contract. If he wasn't then he has 5 accrued seasons.
