Most people are going to say Malkin but I prefer JT in keeper formats. Like you said, Malkin is older, injured often, and Russian. This is easy for me.

No salary involved? Malkin is the easy choice. Salary? Malkin is the harder choice (and here's the obligatory side-note about being JT's biggest fan )
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.

I prefer the guy who has shown he can put up over 100 points. Until Tavares can consistently be a threat to do it, Malkin for me

    Default Geno, No Contest.

If JT ever breaks 100 pts, 50 goals, wins a Conn Smythe, or TWO Art Ross & Hart trophies, gimme a shout. There's no comparison, Malkin is by far the superior player.
    The League:
11-teams, pts-only, no positional restrictions, top 12/20 count.
    1 in-season UFA (24+y/o), 3 round entry draft.
Unlimited (24+y/o) off-season UFAs after the entry draft.

    The Show:
Crosby, Malkin, Kopitar, Eberle, Couture, Krejci, Subban, Simmonds, Hedman, Jokinen, Kesler, Barrie, Johansson

    The Farm:
MacKinnon, Toffoli, Bjugstad, Spooner, Zucker, Bjorkstrand, Jaskin

I'm expecting a huge year from Tavares. Not sure which one you have, but Malkin is the more proven player and has topped 100 points before.

I would think you can probably get Tavares plus for Malkin, that would make a lot of sense if you're contemplating moving Malkin. If you have Tavares, make the trade and get Malkin.

Malkin has the higher upside. If healthy, he'll outscore JT.

The key part is if he's healthy, and if you want to gamble on it. If it makes you worried, then take JT. If you're willing to roll the dice, take Malkin.
