Have you ever looked at the first lineups for the Sharks, Senators, Lightning, Mighty Ducks, Panthers, Predators, Wild, Thrashers and Blue Jackets?

Ok I was gonna do one for Ottawa but are we just basing it on right now, or at the end of the season? Because there are some UFAs who I would say would be "unprotected" meaning they would just become free agents.

Since the potential expansion would happen earliest next summer, it was my intention to base these projections to what it would be like next summer. So Edmonton for example probably wouldn't protect Hemsky's UFA rights next summer.

These expansion teams could most likely claim these unprotected soon-to-be UFA's though, Atleast in the previous drafts they have been able to do so. They just risk losing them in a week (this potential expansion draft would most likely take place prior to entry draft) to free agency if they claim those players.

As Dakkster pointed out, look at the previous expansion team rosters. They aren't pretty to look at.

But just looking at the unprotected players in this thread, these new expansion teams have the potential to be a lot better than previous expansion teams were. There's just a lot more talent around these days. Of course many of the unprotected players are soon-to-be UFA's so the expansion teams may not be able to sign them. But they can possibly get a half-decent team in any case. Here's a potential defense for an expansion team based on just teams presented in this thread so far:

    Bortuzzo-Brewer
    Larsen-Muzzin
Gustafsson-Souray (I didn't take Sbisa as he should be protected)
    McQuaid-McBain

None of those would even be UFA's next summer so the expansion team could keep all of them. Not a great D but might not even be in the bottom-5 D in the NHL either. And there's only 10 teams so far presented in this thread.

When you look back on the inaugural rosters of previous expansion teams, one thing that jumps out is some rather unexpected players putting up big or at least bigger than usual numbers. Worth keeping in mind, particularly if your league doesn't count +-. Not sure if there is a good way to predict who will get the extra opportunities on a sparse roster, but someone will. MacIver, Pellerin, Knutsen, Corkum, Belanger, Greg Johnson, etc., all took full advantage of their opportunities.

I wonder if there are rules for who you can keep, if some teams would keep prospects in the minors for an extra year so it would be easier to keep them.

The Habs look to be in okay shape.

    G- Price

D- Subban, Gorges, Tinordi, Emelin, Diaz. (Note, Markov, Emelin, Bouillon, and Diaz are all unrestricted free agents, so I took two of them, and I have Beaulieu kept as a prospect).

F- Pleks, Pacioretty, Briere, Desharnais, Bourque, Galchenyuk, Prust, Eller, Gallagher

Released: Budaj, Moen, White (RFA), Markov (UFA), Gionta (UFA), Parros (UFA)

I also wonder if some GM who is an advanced stats/possession believer may try to moneypuck his way into an inaugural season playoff berth.

Ottawa Senators Protected list for the 2014-15 season:

    Forwards:
Spezza, Ryan, Turris, Zibanejad, Neil, Smith, MacArthur, Pageau and Condra
PS: This is every forward already with the big club not UFA or RFA.

    Defence:
Karlsson, Methot, Wiercioch, Cowen and Ceci
PS: This is every signed Dman not UFA or RFA.

    Goalie: Lehner
PS: Tough call getting rid of Anderson with only one year left of his deal.

This was an easy list for Bryan Murray to make based on contracts status of his team.

Key UFA's to re-sign: Michalek, Greening and Phillips.

    Unprotected:
Conacher RFA, O'Brien RFA, Kassian UFA, Corvo UFA and Gryba RFA

Would be interesting to see how the draft plays out. Teams could dump some bad contracts. That would be the only way two expansion teams could get to the cap floor.

He's an RFA and without asking too many rules of the expansion draft, I figured RFA's would remain Sens property.

That's an interesting thought, I'm fairly sure the Sens would only be guaranteed his rights if he was protected. The only players I would imagine to be safe would be the ones who haven't actually started their pro contracts yet.

I doubt it. I'd assume that new team X would get negotiating rights to any unprotected RFAs, should they pick any.
