Potential NHL Expansion Draft

Since it's a quiet Monday in August, let's speculate a bit about the NHL's future expansion and the draft that would follow it. Here's the rules from the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft:

26 of the 28 teams existing in the league at the time of the draft were each allowed to protect either one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards or two goaltenders, three defensemen, and seven forwards. The Atlanta Thrashers and Nashville Predators had their entire rosters protected, as they were the two newest franchises in the league, only being in existence for one and two years respectively.

For teams protecting only one goaltender, there was no experience requirement for those left unprotected. For teams protecting two goaltenders, each goaltender left unprotected must have appeared in either 10 NHL games in the 1999–2000 season or 25 games in the 1998–99 season and 1999–2000 seasons combined. A goaltender had to be in net for at least 31 minutes in each game for the game to be counted against these totals.

At least one defenceman left unprotected by each team had to have appeared in at least 40 games in the 1999–2000 season or 70 games in the 1998–99 season and 1999–2000 seasons combined. At least two forwards left unprotected by each team had to have met the same requirements.

I couldn't find what the rules were regarding prospects.

So using that criteria, who would your team be protecting when the NHL's potential expansion takes place?

Here's my protected list for Pittsburgh Penguins:

G: Marc-Andre Fleury (not my choice but going with what Shero would do)
D: Kris Letang, Rob Scuderi, Paul Martin, Simon Despres, Brooks Orpik
F: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, Chris Kunitz, Pascal Dupuis, Brandon Sutter, Beau Bennett, Craig Adams, Joe Vitale

That would leave unprotected the following players:

D: Matt Niskanen, Robert Bortuzzo, Deryk Engelland
F: Dustin Jeffrey, Jussi Jokinen, Tanner Glass, Matt D'Agostini

What would your team's protected and unprotected lists look like?

I am not too big on Boyd Gordon but MacT seems to be. Plus we would need SOMEONE to win us a draw or two at some point in the game. I like Lander and think he has decent upside so I would keep him over the two Ryans, Jones and Smyth.

(I assume Scott Laughton is a prospect and not subject to expansion rules)

That would leave unprotected the following players:

G: Ray Emery
D: Bruno Gervais, Erik Gustafsson, Andrej Meszaros, Chris Pronger (LOL)
F: Jason Akeson, Adam Hall, Tye McGinn, Kris Newbury, Jay Rosehill, Max Talbot

Not exactly the same because of changes in rosters, but still interesting to look at. [For Toronto, they had a debate about whether to protect Kardi, lol]

For Buffalo, I'd go:

G: Miller & Enroth (I'm hoping Miller's trade value at deadline makes this worthwhile)

D: Ehrhoff, Myers, Pysyk (if not a prospect), otherwise Weber

F: Vanek, Ott, Ennis, Foligno, Hodgson, Flynn, Grigorenko (if not a prospect).

The really sad part is I can barely find 7 forwards to protect. I'd be thrilled if an expansion team took Ville Leino and Drew Stafford.

The salary cap would throw some interesting wrinkles into an expansion draft for sure. It would be interesting to see if some of those players with albatross contracts were left unprotected and to see which ones were snatched up and which ones were passed over by the new team. Also, with the proliferation of NMCs in recent years it would be interesting to see if any player with a NMC was picked up and then fought it and what the Union's stance on that might be.

Very interesting point. I think in most cases, a player given an NMC is valuable and wouldn't be exposed.

But there could be a few exceptions. I would think the Union would fight pretty hard for those that have a NMC.

I know the CBA says that NMC mean squat for the purposes of a buy-out. But I did a quick glance and there doesn't seem to be anything in the agreement that I could see that addresses expansion.

I think there probably are some players with NMC's with bad contracts that teams would like to dump. Look at Lecavalier and Briere. Didn't they have NMC's? I'm not sure about Luonogo, Heatley, Havlat - but I'm sure there are a few guys around that teams would love to dump.

I'm not sure if Teravainen would need to be protected considering he's never played an NHL game so that would change to I dunno, Pirri? Morin? Not exactly established NHLers either so I don't know how that would work.
