Who's likely to be around at 12th overall?
I just recently completed a trade with the worst team in my league. I finished in the middle of the pack (7) and needed to shake things up. The trade was immediately blasted in my league...so I need some of your views to see if I messed things up.
My:
Giroux and 12th Overall Prospect Pick (I have 3 total by way of trade).
His:
Spezza and 1st overall prospect pick (Which will be Drouin).
My thoughts were this: Grioux will have a huge salary next season (and will consistently be a 90 point player with upside). Spezza and Ryan provide a nice combo, and Spezza (if healthy) could net 70 points. I only need Drouin to point 30 points to make it worthwhile (which he will in time). We also get money for the Calder winner and I could be in the hunt for that with Drouin and Mac. Any thoughts?

You're probably getting blasted for the following reasons:
Next season, Giroux's salary is 3.75m, then he jumps up to 8.275m/year. So for this upcoming season you are getting way better return in stats from a player that is way cheaper in 2013-14.
Spezza's salary is 7m/year for the next two years, then he'll probably get a contract in the 6-7 range I think, depending on how the next two years go.
Giroux is much younger and will be a 90pt player like you've said.
Spezza is much more injury prone.
I can see why you did this deal with the Calder money on the line, and getting a potential superstar in Drouin. If Drouin becomes the real deal, this will actually look decent for you. Plus you get a nice savings in his salary for 3 years while he is on his ELC.
As for Giroux/Spezza. From a salary perspective, you're not saving that much, maybe a 1.5m/year difference between the two players even after Spezza signs his next contract two years from now.
I can see your rationale for making this deal, but can also see why fellow GMs are giving you a hard time. Overall, just believe in you instincts and carry on. This could actually work out for you pretty well if Spezza stays healthy and finds chemistry with Ryan. Add in the Drouin factor, and you have a trade that both sides felt improved their teams.
Good luck, Cheers.

The type of minor player available at this level could vary widely. We only keep 7 guys on the farm team, but can cycle players in and out if they are producing points. That's why a lot of guys in this league want players who are in the AHL and ready to get the call/up or have already been called up, but have played less than 200 Games Played. The minor pool (in terms of blue chip prospects) is fairly shallow. Guys like McDavid, Nichushkin, Tatar, Lack, Vatanen, Berra, etc are all available and could likely be targets. But, sorry...its actually the 14th pick in the first round (there are only two rounds). So, I thought the pickings would be thin.

I think people undervalue Speeza. He is a ppg player and should produce close to Giroux. Girouxs value is a little higher due to the age gap, but Speeza isn't that old. Getting Drouin is a good deal for you.
People may be upset because they figure they would give you more for Giroux or as Molson X said, the salary cap hits for this year.
Solid deal for you.

Odd that nobody has drafted McDavid if he's eligible for your league.

you are giving up by far the most elite player but it's nothing anyone should be complaining about
Molson covered the salary aspect well. With that in mind as well as the level of talent among the players: proven vs. unproven, I still find it LAUGHABLE that GMs are giving you a hard time. Sounds like an immature or envious lot. Your assets to do what you will. There's no need to feel bad or apologize.

This is a fine trade IMO. Giroux is the BPITD but Spezza is an 85 point player (if healthy - which he never is so say 75 points). Drouin projects to be a future STUD who could easily be a 75-85 point player in 2-3 years playing with St. Louis/Stamkos. Injury is always a concern with Spezza but he has 6 stud years left before he starts winding down - playing with Ryan should help him as well. I don't see why you would take heat for this deal - when Drouin ends up a fantasy stud and Spezza is still producing well this deal won't look bad at all, even with Giroux putting up 85-95 a year.

Usually, when people are complaining about a deal that really isnt all that bad (which I dont feel this trade is bad at all), its usually some sort of sour grapes coming from the whiners. Either they are jealous because they didnt know that certain players/picks were even available and are just moaning because they missed out on obtaining them themselves.
Tell them to quit their belly-aching. Theres nothing wrong with this deal.
