I'd wish him good luck with SKA, getting to be with his family and the whole deal, but this whole thing seems cheap. Sets a dangerous precedent between the NHL-KHL, as well.

I've got one Russian player on my roster right now. Gotta remind myself to drop his ass on waivers tonight for a North American player.

    Theres a big shocker.

I'm surprised that Visnovsky is still here after all the stink he went through before coming back to the NHL post lockout.

If you are an owner of him, here's a heads up for ya.....

I would love to see the NHL appeal the IIHF and make sure Kovy can not play the KHL and definitely not in the Olympics.

If not, I would like to see the NHL pull out of the Olympics.....

Feel very badly for NJ fans.

I would be outraged as a owner of this player.. So if he was offered $20 million here, then he would be happy to stay? Stay home with your families from the beginning, then teams and fans don't have to keep going through all this all the time..

Man, this sucks. As far as fantasy goes, you really, really have to be careful of these Russians now. Why would they even bother to come over to NA at this point? Sure, the competition is better, and I'm sure accommodations, etc. are better, but it's a rink and play style that they're unused to, it's across the globe, and they don't know anyone here.

    Who's next?

Suffice it to say that his timing ROYALLY sucks. In many ways I feel that his behavoiour is reprensible, but in other ways good for him for putting family first.

I don't think this is as big a deal for the current generation Russian hockey players. The ones that have crossed the pond will probably play out their contracts. Most of the younger ones who have intentions to play NHL hockey probably still will.

What this does affect will be the next generation of Russian hockey players. The KHL now has a real superstar to market, a role model to change the perception of a new generation of Russian hockey players and kids are impressionable.

For me the upcoming 2014 NHL entry draft will be the last one I consider drafting a Russian kid.

It appears SKA will not announce the Kovalchuk signing today. Monday is the most likely day.

think the one thing special about the situation is that NJ let Kovo retire and end the contract so technically he was "free" to sign in KHL without NHL appealing.

sportsnet guys commented that it may be due to NJ's financial troubles, and it's easier to attract a new owner/investor when you get $77M off your books.

Now if KHL offers every russian $10M a season, then sure more russians will try to return to KHL.

basically these are cronies of Putin who suddenly became "multi-billionaires" after getting awarded huge energy/oil company contracts

"Arkady Rotenberg is among the most influential businessmen in Russia. in part due to his relationship with president Vladimir Putin. He and his brother Boris (also a billionaire) were judo sparring partners with Putin and remained close ever since. Starting in 2008 the Rotenbergs began acquiring subsidiaries of Russia's national energy champion Gazprom and built them into Stroygazmontazh Corporation (or SGM Group), one of the biggest suppliers of steel pipe to Gazprom and a mjor construction contractors in the energy field"
