Lightbulb Comish Dynasty Categories for 2014-15

    Hey guys,

Thought I would open this to some discussion before asking you guys to vote on this. I feel that goaltending is simply too important, controlling 3 of 9 categories. One player can effectively control 1/3 of your pool results; not sure if that's right. Thinking about making it 3 of 12 categories (9 skater cats) for the start of 2014-15.

Current categories for skaters: G, A, +/-, PiM, PPP, SOG
Current categories for goalies: Wins, Saves, GAA

Easy adds in my opinion are Hits and Blocked Shots. They are the biggest new stat to hit fantasy hockey in years. One of my absolute favourite categories is Time On Ice. It is an indication of how valuable a player is to his team (as judged by his coach of course).

One of my least favourite hockey stats is plus/minus. It is more a function of how well a team is playing than an individual statistic. One of our new owners has suggested we replace +/- with Takeaway/Giveaway Ratio (TK/GV). It seems like a better stat, but can we give up a stat that we've used since the beginning of roto leagues in hockey?

Another suggestion was to replace PPP with Special Teams Points (well, he suggested STP+GWG, but I'm taking a simpler route with just STP). It would reward players who score short-handed points as well and that's just as or more important than scoring on the power play.

Interesting suggestions to be sure, but how do you guys feel? Make your feelings known in this thread. Once it has been discussed enough to get a consensus, then I will ask you guys to send me your votes via email.

To sum up, looking to add Hits, Blocked Shots and Time On Ice as new categories for Skaters, bringing it to 9 categories (in addition to G,A,PPP,+/-,PiM,SOG). If there is enough traction, then we may look at replacing +/- with TK/GV Ratio and PPP with STP.

Discuss and freely state your opinions gents. Thanks.

I am absolutely in favor of Hits and Blocked shots and also TOI ( love this cat). So I think those cats are great additions to our league.

I personally enjoy +/-. Maybe more so just cause I'm used to it in leagues.

My opinion is to not add (TK/GV).

Anyway, whatever we decide to do as a group I'm cool with. Just wanted to share my opinions as requested .

Yeah, I'm sold on adding H, BS and TOI, but on the fence with replacing +/- with TK/GV.

Replacing PPP with Special Teams Points seems very logical to me as well, rewarding both aspects of a very important function in hockey, the Special Teams instead of just one (PPP). It's often where games are won and lost.

Count me in as on board with Special Teams Points as well.

I like the Hits + Blocks as 1 category

    I also still like +/-

My 3rd category suggestion would be GWG + ShG (Shootout goals), but don't mind TOI either

In general I'm in favor of adding cats that help make the fringe players on our rosters more valuable. TOI is great in that regards, especially with the # of D-men we need to field each night. Hits and Blocks is good as well, makes me regret trading Luke Schenn last year but oh well. Also gives value to the 3rd/4th wingers. Right now we have a heavy emphasis on traditional offensive cats and in a league this size that can be tough to counter as a GM.

As for +/- I never plan for this stat and just ignore it. In general you need ridiculous luck and/or planning to not tank PPP to improve your +/- and vice versa. As an example anyone remember Tom Preissing? +40 in '06-'07 with Ottawa, done with the NHL 2 seasons later. That said, I'm not sure Tk/Gv is a better stat since it favors puck carriers vs dump/chase/crash guys. Any change or non-change with this stat I'm ok with.

As for PPP I'm cool with a change to Special Team Points, let the shorthanded specialists get their day in the sun. Another option is to combine Hits and Blocks to one cat, and add Shorthanded Points as a separate cat. Either way the net effect is the same.

    TL;DR - Change is good

And here I thought that all these years of hanging on to Jonathan Bernier and trading for Luongo (which killed me last year) would finally pay off.

I like the idea of adding Hits, Blocks and TOI as 3 new categories.

I don't like the idea of replacing +/- with TK/GV - I'd rather keep it.

I like the idea of replacing PPP with STP. Short handed stats on their own are so few and far between, so combing them with PPP makes sense to me. Makes them somewhat valuable at least.

At least you'll get more out of them than I did with Tim Thomas. Crazy Effer.

I like adding Hits, Blocked Shots, and TOI.

I'd love to abolish +/-... to me we already get punished by having players on bad teams by the playoff format, which also lends players on good teams extra trade value.

I'd be okay with Takeaways, but don't like the give/take ratio. I can't seem to find that stat in Fantrax or Yahoo easily.

Basically I'd be fine adding the 3 categories, removing +/-, and having 8 skater cats.

I like adding hits and blocked shots.. don't mind TK/GV ratio. For one of the guys who said it might be hard to find if it's shown whenever you click on a player in Fantrax.

Someone also mentioned shootout goals. I'm on board for that too.

That Luongo deal is working out nice in the long run for ya! Add in hits for Kane and Schneider in NJ this year and you're sitting pretty.

    Talking

I would be in favor of adding more skater categories and hits, blocks are nice additions as they give extra value to players that wouldn't otherwise be particularly valuable in fantasy leagues. I haven't used TOI before, but I would be in favor of adding it as well.

I tend to agree that +/- is pretty bad and very unpredictable in many occassions, but at least it rewards aspect of the game that is actually important, outscoring opponents at even strength. Unfortunately TK/GV ratio is pretty much garbage stat as counting of them is very unreliable and there are massive differences how they are counted between arenas. You might want to read articles I linked at the bottom to get some idea how poorly RTSS stats are collected and especially takeaways and giveaways. There's also a massive difference between positions with TK/GV ratio where defensemen are automatically more or less terrible compared to forwards (anything over 0.5 for dmen is quite good whereas over half of the forwards are 1.0 or better).

I don't have particularly strong opinion on STP. PPP would overshadow SHP for most players anyway, but adding SHP is fine as long they aren't added as their own category as SHP alone is really poor category, probably worse than +/- or GWG. I don't want GWG added either as I think that's another pretty poor category.

Some blog post on RTSS stats if you want to get better idea how poor they are. http://www.coppernblue.com/2010/3/30...-takeaways-and http://www.inlouwetrust.com/2010/7/8...the-new-jersey

I'm sure it's not too long before some starts adding relative Corsi, Fenwick and PDO as categories, lol

    Hey guys!

Back from vacation! Still won't get back to work until the 22nd, but I'm back from my trip to Philly!

I'm totally with Russ on this one. Hits and Bks should definitely be in and even if I've never used TOI, I don't mind it, but I would keep +/- for now.

If STP can replace PPP, I don't mind this either (but I don't know if it'll make a big difference).

Also, I was thinking if Chinny can easily recalculate this year salaries using the new categories (assuming Hits, Bks and TOI) it would be interesting to see the impact of these on the salaries.

Time to think about my cuts now...
