    Default Rebuild picks question

In a rebuilding team I have the #2, #4, #5, #8, #9, #10 #20 overall picks in a 10 team 6 round prospect draft. Should I even bother taking Jones with any pick from 5-10? I won't be ready for another 2 full plus seasons to compete for $$$ but in 3-4 years will Jones have been worth the wait or should I stick with all forwards and pass on Jones completely?

If you can stash in your farm, he should be worth it by year 3 for sure. He'll be a star Dmen.

Without knowing exactly what the rest of your prospect situation looks like, I'd certainly consider taking him with one of your later 1st round picks, maybe at #10 if he's still available.
10 Team, Points Only, Cash League

25 Man Roster (no position), top 20 point getters count at end of month
Keep 20/25 at seasons end, Cut 5 to FA for redrafting

Stamkos, Tavares, Eichel, Mercer, JRobertson, RThomas, Kucherov, Nugent-Hopkins, Tuch, KConnor, Necas, Point, Konecny, SJarvis, Cozenz, Morrissey, Bouchard, Josi, Novak, Tolvanen, Peterka, Brink

I don't know what your team is like today so I don't know how much you need this draft, but I personally would try and trade some combination of the 8, 9, and 10 (or all three if necessary) for the 1, and then try and get all of Mac, Drou, Barkov, and Nichu with those picks.

I'll make your life easier. I hold the #7 pick and I intend on drafting Jones if he is available.

Depends on your league format (how many players at each position, stat categories and their weight...)

If this is a standard cat league, I would go for Jones when you reach number 8 but not before (he should be gone after your 10th though).

Odds are this is what you should have (X):
    1) MacKinnon
    2) Drouin X
    3) Barkov
    4) Lindholm X
    5) Nichushkin X
    6) Monahan
    7) Domi or Horvat (this pick is the though one, as I think Jones should go ahead of these 2... if he doesn't though, he's all yours... I feel picking Jones ahead of Lindholm or Nichuskin in a standard league is not the best decision fantasy-wise. If your league counts Hits and Blocked Shots, pick him over Nichushkin)
Keeper league 14 teams (H2H, 20 active players keep 16 NHLers, 16 minors)
    Scoring Cats: G-A-PTS-PPG-PPA-(+/-)-HITS-BLK-SHP-SOG-FOW-GWG / W-L-SVS-SV%-GAA-SO

C- Crosby, Barzal, Bennett, Schmaltz, Novak
W- Forsberg, Batherson, Nichuskin, Tuch, Konecny, Maccelli, Sharangovich, Bertuzzi, Kaliyev, Neighbours, Reichel
    D- Carlson, Rielly, Klingberg
    G- Hellebuyck, Demko, Merzlikins, Vejmelka

    Minors:
F: Fantilli, Cooley, Bourgault, Perreault, Cowan, Ohgren, N. Foote, Goyette, Iskhakov, Denisenko, Tracey
    D: Simashev, Willander, Lambos
G: Schmidt, Rodrigue, DiPietro, Gaudreau, McKay

Ha!!! that answers my question... Do you guys have hits and blocked shots in your league?

No, it's a point league (1st league in my signature).

In the 1st round, I want players that are very likely to become fantasy relevant. As much as I like Domi and Horvat, they are not bluechip prospects. If Jones becomes a 40+ pts defenseman, which I think is very likely, then I'll have what I am hoping to get from this pick (i.e. a solid roster player).

I don't disagree with this order, other than if it was me I would hope to get Mackinnon over Drouin. I think long term he will be the better fantasy player.

if Jones is going at 7, and you can't move up to the 1 with your 8,9,10 (those are the only three I would move to go to 1, if you're rebuilding you need those lower picks) I would probably take Domi, Horvat, and Shinkaruk with those picks. Shinkaruk is a hit or miss guy, he is either going to be a bust or big point producer IMO. Maybe Wennberg though, sounds like that kid could be a player.

With that many picks, I would take Jones at 5.. Why not take the best "points" d-man in the draft with the 5th pick.. Don't let him slip to 7th..

Jones at 5 is great value, even in a points only league.

It probably comes down to Jones vs Monahan/Lindholm/Nichuskin.

To me Jones outweighs Nichuskin, so Jones vs Monahan or Lindholm, and since you have 4th overall too I would draft:

    Drouin at 2,
    Barkov or Lindholm at 4
    and Jones at 5

Especially since you are willing to wait.

Points only I bet Nichuskin easily outweighs Monahan and Lindholm in 2 years.

    Id bet that.

Monahan and Lindholm are MUCH safer picks, and I don't gamble on Russians.
