Default Antii Raanta or Joacim Eriksson

If you could own one of these goalies, which one would you want?

I have a chance to acquire one and I can't decide. My league values WINS for goalies.

Raanta could back up Crawford next season. Not much goalie depth in Chicago.

Eriksson could back up Schnieder if the Canucks decide to let Lack recover from his surgery playing in the AHL assuming Eriksson has a decent training camp.

I'm not some much worried about the upcoming season though, but moreso the season after that and forward. Is it close or does one of these guys stand out with ability and opportunity? Thanks

I think the opportunity is much better for Raanta in Chicago.

Eddie Lack is on a one-way contract in 2013-14 so the Canucks will likely want him to seize the back-up gig.

Yea, I couldn't agree more. Eriksson has Lack and Schneider ahead of him, while Raanta only has Crawford.

Talent-wise it's a toss up at this point.

Yes but that just means that he makes the same whether he's in the NHL or AHL, but I guess it makes more sense paying him $850,000 to play in the NHL and Eriksson $70,000 (AHL contract) as opposed to paying Lack $850,000 to play in the AHL and Eriksson $925,000 to play in the NHL.

I just wonder why Eriksson would have chosen Van. then over other teams knowing that. I can see him willing to prove himself for one season in the AHL but he still has two young goalies in Schnieder and Lack ahead of him for years.

Perhaps the Canucks assured him that if he plays well this season a spot would be opened up for him next season because they did give him a two year deal.

He was never going to be handed an NHL job. This really isn't a bad spot for him.

Yes but I can see other teams with less in front of him- NJ, Carolina, Edmonton, Phoenix, NYI, Philly etc. That's not saying that any of those teams made a pitch for him but I wouldn't see Vancouver near the top of the list.

Exactly. Everyone has to earn their gigs. I agree that Raanta is the guy to go after here, but it's not by a lot more. He has better opportunity, depending on what happens with Crawford. I own Eriksson and I'm pondering if I should go for Raanta too in this summer's draft. I don't like the uncertainty of Bryzgalov and Halak, and even though I already have a bunch of solid goalie prospects, I'd love to have one more

Justin Goldman has been pumping Joacim Eriksson's tires ever since Philly let him walk. From everything I have read from Justin he seems to be a big believer in Eriksson.

I'd love to hear Goldman's opinion and reasoning on these two guys for sure.

I agree on the 'never going to be handed an NHL job' comment but I also wonder about what went into the decision to choose Vancouver if the organisation believes in Lack. I can only see two possible scenarios here 1) he didnt' have any offers from a team that could offer him a slightly less cluttered path to an NHL gig or 2) Vancouver knows something about Lack that gives them concern.

Schneider is a young, stud goalie who could become entrenched in Vancouver for the next 7 or 8 years and if Lack is the goalie we all believed him to be a year ago then he's a more than capable backup. As Excelsior pointed out there are a number of teams that make much more sense for Eriksson from an opportunity standpoint.
