It sucks for Briere, but you can't feel too bad for him. He's going to get a real nice golden handshake. Plus, he is now UFA and free to sign wherever he pleases. He also has the luxury of not having to worry if the team can afford him. He is 35 years old and is already gonna collect a salary from the Flyers. He can quite afford to sign a 4 year/12m deal with another team. He'll be handsomely remunerated in any event.
He is owed $5 million combined for the next two years. He'll get more from his next team. This is not a bad thing for him aside from having to move.

briere is still gonna get the remaining salary owed from the flyers right? just sign for dirt cheap with the pens, problem solved. kids can stay in school, you can get revenge on the flyers, and have a good shot at the cup.

The only thing I would be pissed about if I was Briere is that he, and his agent, probably wishes the Flyers bought him out last summer.

If he was 34 signing a new contract he would have got paid a hell of a lot more than he will now on a 35+ contract.

Hey Guru, I assume your comment is related to the CBA rule put in place for older players? I am not aware of it....can you elaborate?

    Taken from capgeek.com

    WHAT'S A 35-PLUS CONTRACT

Players who sign multi-year contracts when they are age 35 or older (calculated on June 30 of the season the contract begins) count toward the cap under all circumstances, regardless of where (or if) the player is playing.
    ----

A 35+ contract carries more risk because the team that signs the player is stuck with their cap hit even if the player retires. A bigger risk = a lesser payday.

Thanks Guru....I see your point, and its valid, but I only think its in play if you are talking about superstars that are going to command a contract that takes them to retirement. I could be wrong, but I think Briere is looking at a 3 year contract at best......similar to what Gonchar has been through ..... I think Briere getting bought out, combined with his new contract, is a great scenario for him.....

I agree, I also think Briere getting bought out, combined with his new contract is a great scenario....

I just think if it was a year earlier it would have been the best scenario.

He might of, could of, gotten an extra year or two on his next contract which would translate to another 4-6M I would assume.

Under the old CBA there was no reason to buy out Briere, he would have finished his contract in Philly at the least. If they bought him out under that CBA he would have been confused. The fans and media would have been shocked and outraged that such a dedicated playoff warrior was cut from the team.

But things change and to move forward you can't resent the past. Danny will still land a good contract and it will be supplemented by his buyout funds. Whether it means the difference between a 3 and a 5 year deal I certainly don't feel sorry for him. As far as being on the raw end of a business deal he is still going to come out of it very well. I get the vibe that he understands, respects, and appreciates the state of things. He's along for the ride!

This is an older post, yet it seems that the ball of the future for Bryz has been in his own court for some time now.

35+ contract didn't scare Philly and Dallas for throwing money to Streit and Gonchar. If a team wants a player they're ready to give them the term and money despite it being a 35+ contract.

You're comparing Philly throwing out ridiculous contracts (35+) to other teams?

Dallas isn't Philly as far as I know. Islanders also paid good money to Visnovsky despite it being 35+ contract. What about Anaheim and Sheldon Souray last year? Detroit and Mikael Samuelsson? Edmonton and Nikolai Khabibulin? Devils and Bryce Salvador? etc.
