for a rebuilding team in a multicat dynasty which player would you rather have moving forward? currently have seto but I think some of those players have better upside for a rebuild. Thanks for any feedback

First off, Jon Merrill is a D.

If it was me, looking long term, I prefer Couturier especially if your league counts Faceoff wins.

Sorry, I actually misread the title. I thought you were looking for a forward (plus you posted this in the "forward discussion" section of the forums).

Either way, I'd still take Couturier.

    I'd take Couturier or Eller.
They are in similar situations. Both have other centres ahead of them in the depth charts and both are heavily leaned on in SH and defensive roles. Eller had a very strong year and was arguably the Habs best forward in the final 20 games of the season. Couturier will be 2nd fiddle to Giroux for the foreseeable future but has enough offensive upside to make it worth the wait in a dynasty league. Both are decent at faceoffs. For the next 2-3 years I'd take Eller but if you're willing to wait a few more take Couturier.

For that exact same reason, I would be inclined to go with Eller. I've been to many Habs games this past season and I can say that the kid is really coming into his game.

I don't think the Gryba hit will phase him; just look how Paciorrety came back strong! I think we can expect Eller to play an important role for the Habs come next year. There is one slight problem though, in regards to his FOW situation... The Canadiens have 4 ''2nd line'' centermen that they spread out amongst their top 3 lines (Plekanec, Desharnais, Eller, Galchenyuk). If Eller was to get some FOWs, I do not see him dethrowning Plekanec or Desharnais on the top 2 lines (at least not early on), so that would mean that he would most likely get 3rd line duties, which would hurt his overall production.

Best case scenario would be for Eller to go back on the wing in order to play on the top 2 lines. However, I can see the Habs rolling with the following lines early on in 2013-14:

    Paciorrety-Desharnais-Free Agent
    Bourque-Plekanec-Gionta
Galchenyuk-Eller-Gallagher (could become the 2nd line halfway through the season though)
    Moen-Bickell (yes, I went there)-Prust
Keeper league 14 teams (H2H, 20 active players keep 16 NHLers, 16 minors)
    Scoring Cats: G-A-PTS-PPG-PPA-(+/-)-HITS-BLK-SHP-SOG-FOW-GWG / W-L-SVS-SV%-GAA-SO

C- Crosby, Barzal, Bennett, Schmaltz, Novak
W- Forsberg, Batherson, Nichuskin, Tuch, Konecny, Maccelli, Sharangovich, Bertuzzi, Kaliyev, Neighbours, Reichel
    D- Carlson, Rielly, Klingberg
    G- Hellebuyck, Demko, Merzlikins, Vejmelka

    Minors:
F: Fantilli, Cooley, Bourgault, Perreault, Cowan, Ohgren, N. Foote, Goyette, Iskhakov, Denisenko, Tracey
    D: Simashev, Willander, Lambos
G: Schmidt, Rodrigue, DiPietro, Gaudreau, McKay

    Lars Eller, for me.

Eller put up 25 even-strength last season... in under 15min/game.
    That's impressive.
    Very, very impressive.
Among the top Canadiens in ESP.
Yet only 8th among MON forwards in TOI/game.

Now, it was a line that clicked very nicely.
Especially March/April. Not sure that will continue.

IMO, Eller is the future C2 for Montreal.
Better overall ceiling than Desharnais (who is more suited for C3 duties).
On the dot, Plek/DD/Eller... all about the same, 50%.

While I like Couturier's overall game, the speed at which I've seen him play seems like it is a tad below the NHL-level (even though it may have been significantly higher than the average Q level).
Sometimes that's the way it works out.

    I prefer Eller.

I would pick Eller, then Couturier.

Rookies are 23 years old or younger in the draft year and never reached 60pts (forward), 40pts (defense), 25 wins (goalie)

    Start : C RW LW Utility D D G
    Points : A - G = 1 pt W = 2 pts SO = 1pt

    C - S.Stamkos, J.Thornton, K.Turris, D.Stepan
    LW - O.Palat, B.Saad, A.Burakovsky
    RW - B.Wheeler, T.Toffoli, C.Atkinson
    D - E.Karlsson, S.Gostisbehere, C.Fowler, A.Ekblad, A.Larsson
    G - C.Hellebuyck, D.Dubnyk, A.Niemi, K.Lehtonen

Consensus seems to be either Eller or Couturier, most favouring Eller..

I'll go against the grain, since it's a dynasty, I'll bet on Courturier, whose still just 20 years old...

    3C - 3LW - 3RW - 6D - 2G

I'd go with Couturier first and Eller second. But it's close. I think Eller is more easy to redraft and Couturier brings more value if you put him on the market.
    Points only keeper league
    7 teams
    28 keepers
    Weekly line up: 12 F / 6 D / 2 G
    Goalie stats: W=2 / SO=2

Eller has taken a while to find his game. Couturier will get there at some point. If Couturier is traded as rumoured, he will arrive even quicker than if he remains in Philly.
So it depends on your rebuild time frame. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

thanks everyone for the feedback, great response. I was also debating between couturier and eller. my gut was initially leaning towards couturier but eller had such a good year I wanted to see where everyone stood. Since it's so close I decided to just go with my gut and take the slightly younger player.
