How easy will it be to trade him? he makes the same money as Tavares?

and guesses on who would take him? He has value but...

He's untradable on his own. He would be included in a package deal where he would act as negative asset to balance off a deal. If he was a free agent right now, he'd be looking at a $2 mil offer. He's more useful on teams like EDM, COL, FLA, TB where he can be a locker room guy for young players.

I would think it would be next to impossible to move him. I have no idea who would take him. How many years left does he have left on that albatross. Maybe someone who needs to hit the cap floor?

He could be swapped for another bad contract just to give both players a change of scenery. Otherwise he's a buyout.

Turns 35 before next season starts? Check.
Steady decline in production since 2006? Check.
Two years left at cap hit of $5.5 million? Check.

He does bring leadership but at the same time he's led a very talented team that has disappointed and missed the playoffs.

Agree with the other posters - if he's traded it will be in a deal where it's for salary dump / balancing salaries etc.

I said this in another thread but he might hold some marginal value to a team that wants to spend less real dollars and yet still take some cap hit (averages 3.5 next 2 years but 5.5 cap hit).

I hope, even if he gets bought out, he gets sent to a team where he can have some success. He was way overpaid, but otherwise did well to endure a horrifically run team for a long time.

I wonder if a Horcoff for Brian Campbell package would work? Florida dumps big salary and takes on Horcoff's big cap for 2 more years while Edmonton eats 'only' 3 more years of Campbell's $7M+ but Edmonton gets a very good 1-2 puck moving Dman that they covet. Big expense for the Oilers but big positive move for their blueline.

No incentive for FLA to take Horcoff. Give up first pairing defenceman for 3rd line centre for similar salaries makes no sense.

    Not similar salaries.
Horcoff is a cap hit of $5.5M buts earns $4M and then $3 for the next 2 seasons. Campbell's cap AND salary for the 3 years is $7,142,875 per year. Big difference, and is Florida is still a budget conscious that we know they are, then things actual make more sense. This would be a hockey move for Edmonton but a business move for Florida.

They didn't accidentally sign him to a bad deal. They traded for him. And he's done well for them. No chance of this happening.

It is too bad Horcoff wants to leave. he is a valuable third line center and mentor to that team. yes he's old. yes he's overpaid. But the team still needs bottom 6 players and veteran leadership.

On the FLA trade, Campbell's cap hit would be an albatross for the Oilers given that the Nuge and Schultz will need to get paid in two years.

Horcoff is not the worst contract in the NHL so there might be a deal to be had where the primary value for the other team is getting rid of their player. For example:
-If the Oilers take Ville Leino back they could probably get Buffalo to throw something else in. Not sure why the Oilers would do that but if they just want 'a change' that does it.
-Does Toronto want to get out of Mikhail Grabovski deal?
-Maybe new management in Columbus has decided they don't want James Wisniewski on their team.

I wonder why everyone keeps referring to these players from the Oilers as Leaders? The whole lot of them have done nothing but lose there entire time there except one lucky run. It makes no sense to me why any of them could be classified as leaders.

This is something that could make sense for both clubs personnel wise and should still work with the cap

An interesting point. However, hyopothetically, if Horcoff was a good leader, but the team around him was garbage, would his leadership ability allowed the team to suddenly win enough games to make the playoffs?

If not, then how valuable is leadership ability? An interesting discussion.
