    The Great One

    Default Draft party traditions

Im posting here to get some more readers.

Does anyone have any cool draft traditions? We have a few but I'm always looking to add more. Its these little moments that make the draft so fun.

Share everything to where its usually hosted, who hosts it, what you eat/drink, who pays for it, trophy, losers, traditions, etc.

Ill post ours a little later on.

We have a ton of fun with ours. Generally, we do some great food and drinks. Most years we've had prime choice steaks and guys bring other stuff and we've had crap like pizza rolls to amazing avocado egg rolls. So it's a ton of fun. We drinks a ton and usually stop at some point to smoke cigars for a little bit. We heckle each other and sadly we don't have a trophy, yet. We've talked about it and might some day soon. They're talking about taking a hockey championship from the local beer league and turning that into our fantasy trophy.

Miss those days of the big drafts.

We used to have good group of guys for one year draft pools.
Order pizza, drink beer, big chart paper on the wall to record teams.
If you picked a player already drafted you missed your turn.
No real traditions other than serious hacking on picks.

Our office pools have been a ton of fun for the past so many years - get together in a room with all our cheat sheets, magazines, dobber forum expertise, etc.

About 15 - 18 of us would assemble, order some pizza or sandwiches with pop/water and draft a 14 - 16 player roster in a couple of hours, snake style.

There would be a lot of trash talk involved - especially targeted towards Leafs and Habs die hards. There were invariably some guys that would take ages - I remember, 1 year where the guy that had the first pick (notoriusly slow to pick his players) took 7 minutes to decide on Ovechkin. Some even had the bad habit of picking players who had already been picked.

Unfortunately, this season being curtailed, we could not get it coordinated at the right time. So looking forward to next year.

My latest one was done at Boston Pizza where we had a large table along a wall that had outlets for laptops to plug in. So beer, wings, pizza served right there.

For in-house drafts I recommend using a projector and displaying an Excel spreadsheet to make it easier to track picks. That way it's also possible for out-of-towners to be part of the draft if the sheet is published online and updated.

When I was back in college one year we held our draft at my place. It was your normal draft where we had pizza and super big gulps (no alcohol becasue we were serious! lol). But what made this draft special was that we had porn on the tv right beside the draft table. We were all single guys at the time and you could sure tell you hadnt gotten any in a long time as they were totally distracted as their eyes were glued to the tv!

Since we have several guys from other states, just getting our chat room to keep from crashing and have everyone show up on time is a taditionion in itself. There's always hell to pay if you pop in late. We also have one GM who's always doing it while at work and is barely prepared so part of our tradition is seeing how many guys he tries to draft that have been picked already. It's actually very funny and we laugh a lot. It would be a blast to have everyone together in the same room though. We've had the same group of guys for 10+ years now.

We have an 11 GM league.

We all live within couple hours drive (Toronto-Windsor), except one (Winnipeg). He either does it online, or sends his brother with a draft list.

Two years ago we had 10 chickens on the spit and drafted while they cooked. Last year we had a whole lamb on the spit, and again, drafted while it cooked. Salad, chips, all the side bullshit too.

Last place and 2nd last pay for the booze (2 cases of 'premium' beer in cans (for pool purposes), and a bottle of something, along with ice) while 3rd last and 4th last pay for the food and charcoal. They usually pay between $80-100 each.....the punishment of being a bottom feeder and/or tanking!

We have a toilet seat where the loser gets a nice picture with his head coming through the toilet seat! That's always fun. Our trophy is a stanley cup replica (about 1.5 feet tall). Ive posted a picture somewhere on these forums before.

The draft party usually starts around noon with GM's rolling in between then and 1-1:30. Guys swimming, drinking, trade talks, etc. We discuss all the rule changes that we previously talked about on our forum. We tried discussing rule changes one year at the draft but it was chaotic, stressful and argumentative. Now we do it on the site, everyone can relax, think, and discuss the possible changes normally. We already started discussing them. It should take a month before everyone can come to an agreement!

Before the draft starts, all of the past last place GM's do a shot/shotgun together, and all of the past winners do a shot/shotgun together too. It usually signals the start of the draft!

Our host recently renovated his back yard....pool, hot tub, bar, bbq.....he's pretty much the implied annual host now.

This year I'm implementing a new rule. If you ask "has this guy been taking yet?". It's a shot/shutgun. Or if you draft someone who has been taken already, again, a shot/shotgun.

Another one I want to implement this year is....Im going to ask everyone who they think will absolutely get drafted this year outside of our first round. Whoever drafts the player with the most 'votes' will have to do a shot, and give away a shot/shotgun too! Should be fun! They won't know who it is until he's drafted.

Oh, and since all of our friends know about our draft party....they crashed it two years ago and had a blast. Last year we told them not to come until after the draft is over, and after we eat/drink....some respected that...some didn't! haha

This year, we passed a new rule....If you want to bring a guest to our draft, he has to bring a case of beer (again premium, and cans) and the inviter has to bring a bottle of something! We'll see if anyone gets invited now.

Our age range is between 27-45 (and yes, we still shotgun beers) and it's the day I look forward to the most in the summer!

Send me some more traditions to start!

EDIT: Oh and the trash talking is borderline going to far. Actually it is to far!!! Fortunately we are all very good friends so it makes it easier to handle. Ask Angus about the trash talking. I remember him loving it. He audited one of the teams here.

I host, as the commissioner, our annual draft every year. Traditional pizza, a lot of beer.

It's a deep league, so the latest rounds are painful, since three players called out of four are already gone. Yeah, alcohol don't help in that regard. Thrash talk all over the place of course, but we are really close friends, so nothing is taken personal.

The former champion gives the trophy, with a brand new engraved plaque, to the new winner, who keeps the trophy for the entire year.

    Here is the real one.
