Default GM of the year finalists: Bergevin/Murray/Shero

Bergevin and Murray took teams that missed the playoffs and lead them to division titles, and Shero made the most significant moves at the deadline.

    My vote is for Bergevin.

Murray is not as deserving as MacLean is for Ottawa's success this year IMO.

Shero made crazy moves this year, but they seemed ''too easy'', unlike the Neal vs Goli deal, where the Penguins were not the clear winner from the get go. The traded players actually wanted to go to Pitts, so the trading power fell in their hands as opposed to the GMs.

Despite his meltdown in the playoffs i really believe Therrien did a heck of a job coaching this season. While i believe the habs r headed in the right direction/only getting better i think they overachieved this season. Thats coaching!
Saying that i believe berg no doubt twikked thgs inn the org so that it gave it more positive direction. This was important after last years situarion

    So great job by berg!

Big credit to murray for hiring gabby. That was huge.

Why isn't bryan mentioned here. Such a calming no panic influence.

As stupid as this award is, I don't see how Shero doesn't win it.

Evaluating a GM off 48 games is absurd, so my vote goes to Shero just because of the Iginla, Murray, and Morrow trades and the Vokoun signing.

I agree that it is a stupid award... work accomplish by a GM over a given season can't be evaluated before 4 or 5 years.

I believe that the best trade to occur this season was Cole for Ryder AND 3rd... Hockeywise and capwise, the Habs won it big time. All the deadline deals made by Shero were good, so I could live with either one of them winning it.

I guess Shero would have to take it.. He made the biggest splash but not very hard to do when your the favourite and have Crosby and Malkin as your 2 centers..

I think his best moves though were the Jokinen deal and signing Vokoun.. That's why I'd give to to him..

All great nominees. I can't believe I'm saying this but I like Bergevin. Habs going from last in the East to 2nd in the conference, pretty impressive.

    Cheers.

I don't see how Shero doesn't win it. He wins everything just for his deadline moves for me.

GM of the year should be whoever got two 2nd round picks for Douglas Murray. That's a mindblower right there folks.

Shero never made any moves. He had players lining up to play with the 2 best players in the world. He had all the leverage in the world.

Bergevin seems to have made a good hire in Therrien, his steadfast approach to the Subban holdout was pure gold (a Norris D for 2.5 a year!), Prust was a great success and the entire culture of the organization seems to have changed. One must admit though that the core of that team is still Gainey's.

Bergevin should win. Good trades and he quickly created and solidified an identity in Montreal. Oh, and the Subban negotiation was a huge coup for him.

    Don't agree.

His best decisions were probably hiring Therrien as coach, and Dudley as Assistant GM.

His 'only' trade was Ryder and a 3rd for Cole.

Subban was a really good signing but a bad way of doing it, Prust (at 2.5 for 4 years) not so much, and Descharnais is a pretty good deal for both sides.

His best signing was Pacioretty, by far.

Saying that, he was handed Galchenyuk, and his 'best' rookie was from a previous GM. Credit to the coach for that.

Those accomplishments doesn't outshine Shero. Who did the best managerial job to fix his lineup and get ready for another cup run. Not to mention all the injuries they had this year...again.

Prust was an overpayment, but a needed one. He has been worth every penny for the Habs.

And how was Subban a bad way of doing it? That is EXACTLY how you negotiate with an RFA with little leverage. Most other GMs cave and give these ridiculous and unearned long term deals.
