    Default Mike Smith

Mike Smith is understandably expecting a big payday as an unrestricted free agent this summer.
"I've always been on one- or two-year deals," Smith said. "This is the time in my career I've solidified being a No. 1 goaltender, and I believe I should be compensated for it." Smith was amazing in 2011-12 and even though he took a step backwards this season, he still ended up with a respectable 2.58 GAA and .910 save percentage in 34 starts. The Coyotes have expressed an interest in re-signing him, but Smith suggested that the lack of ownership might get in the way. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly argued that GM Don Maloney doesn't have any "real limitations on the club’s ability to re-sign Mike Smith" beyond the obvious fact that he has to work within a budget, let any other GM does. Either way, Smith might hit the open market this summer.

It will be interesting to see who pays up for him and how he adjusts in another teams' defensive system.

I'm not one of the people who believes the Flyers will buy Bryz out, but wouldn't it be hilarious to see them do that and sign Smith?

People know how well Phoenix's system works for goalies. They will be wary of paying Smith too much over too long of a term.
    Without me, it's only "aweso".

Holmgren: "We'll overpay for Mike Smith if we can get Yandle in the deal" (wishful thinking lol)

Struggling over the decision of whether or not to keep this guy this year. Invested pretty heavily in him at the redraft and he was just a bit disappointing to me. A little scared of what will happen if he lives Phoenix + when he doesn't have to fight for his contracts.

Do me a huge favour. Don't keep him. I need some goalie luck.

I would worry if Smith stays in Phoenix, but Tippet leaves!

If anything, that motivates me more to keep him. Can't resist killing the buzz of the man who gave me my name!

That's a really good point. Forgot that Tippet's contract was up.

I saw speculation of tippet signing in dallas, if he does this does lehtonen move into a top 5 situation? or does it hurt his save totals for leagues that track that?

    1) I like Mike Smith to sign in Minnesota.

    2) I've never bought the Tippett = Good Goaltending.
I've long commented that I think Phoenix goaltenders do well because nobody gives a crap about hockey in Phoenix.
When nobody cares and there isn't any pressure, goalies can do well... when nobody gives a crap and expectations are low.

The coaching system can be designed to be offensive or defensive.
To go after getting shots on net... or to limit them.
Phoenix was in the bottom 3 in the NHL in shots against per game in 2010-2011 & 2011-2012... so I don't buy anybody saying "Oh, Tippet's system helps goalies." That's hogwash.
This year they were actually improved defensively... 10th worst in the NHL in SOGA... but the team fared worse and Smith fared worse.

    So... question on Phoenix/Tippett/Smith...

Q: Why was Smith so much worse this year than this year?
I mean... it was pretty much the same Phoenix team, same Tippet... what changed?

Interesting way to look at it, never thought about it that way.

Maybe that's why Bobrovsky was able to turn so many heads this year, too.

I believe Mike Smith dealt with a few injuries this year that limited him to 34 games. He did still post 5 shutouts which was a good sign. I honestly think he was burnt out + injured after playing 83 games the season before. Goaltenders who go from playing backup or 1b slots to playing huge minutes often get injured.

I think he is due for a bounce back year, IF he resigns in Phoenix AND Tippett is resigned. Phoenix has a fairly young up and coming D-core and should continue to play a defensive style because of their lack of forward talent.

nhl gms are by nature stupid stupid men of that there is no doubt and someone will line up to throw bags of money at this guy

but at the end of the day with so many other options out there how anyone could be in a hurry to sign up for the bryz experience part 2 is just mind boggling

but then again glen sather keeps signing ufa centers so to expect gms to learn from the mistakes of others when they cant even learn from their own might be a bit much to expect

hell if i am mike smith the next time i see bryz i probably kick him in the nuts and say thanks for ****ing up free agency for me *******

I have the chance to secure Smith as my 3rd goalie behind King Henrik and Rask. We have 5 goalie stats and i have been dominating Save % and GAA but not wins, SHO and shots against. A 3rd goalie could really help me.

But is the time to stay away from him or to grab him ?
