I was wondering the same thing myself earlier today. I was hoping he'd re-sign with the Islanders for roughly the same amount, but I doubt that happens considering it will be a weak free agent crop and there are a lot of teams who could really use a player like Streit (Philadelphia, Edmonton, Detroit, Chicago, New Jersey, Calgary, Colorado, Dallas, and Anaheim all come to mind). I could see him sign a 3 year deal for $24 million.

visnovsky was a much better defenceman this year and he just signed two years at 4.75mil... but streit scored more points so that could push his contract a bit higher.

You can expect at least $5 million per year over the next 3 years.

    April 3, 2013

"Mark Streit and the Islanders are working on a contract extension, but they are reportedly still apart on the value of the deal. Sources have told Newsday that Streit is seeking a three-year deal with an average annual value in excess of the $4.75 million that teammate Lubomir Visnovsky signed last week. Streit's name has come up in the rumor mill as a possible trade candidate, but with the Islanders in the thick of the playoff race it is unlikely that they will move their captain and top defenseman."

sorry pretsel27...your Rep comment pointed out that I'm not very good at math...I was thinking an AAV of $6 mill for Streit, so that would be a 3 year/$18 mill deal.

That is what I originally meant, and is a bit more inline what what others have said

    sorry for the mistake

I think people will be surprised with some of the UFA deals. The cap is going down and so far there hasn't been much change in terms of contract extensions handed out. Someone has to bite the bullet.

I think this will be true for some of the second tier free agents, but the top free agents in any given year (as Streit clearly is) will still command top dollar. Unless the Islanders re-sign him, I believe there will be a bidding war for him simply because many teams need a top pairing dman who can run a power play.

The problem is that a lot of the bidders will be out of the mix because they will be at or over the cap ceiling. I can see a bidding war happening but instead of 8-10 teams it could be as low as 2-3 teams.

    calling streit a top-pairing d-man is like calling wideman a top-pairing d-man....
both guys are average 5-on-5, but excel on the PP.

I can't argue with you that Steit isn't a defensive stud like Weber or Pietrangelo, but he has been a top pairing dman his entire career, first with Montreal and then later with the Islanders. Whether or not you feel he deserves to be considered a top pairing dman is irrelevant because whichever team he signs with this summer will continue to use him in that role.

Wideman, on the other hand, has always been more of a second pairing dman, especially when he was in Boston and Washington. I don't know what role his is playing in Calgary, but if it is as a top pairing dman, that might have more to do with Calgary's lack of depth at the position than on Wideman's abilities.

Streit was more of a winger and PP specialist in Montreal especially during his breakout year. Not really used as a top pairing dman at all.

you watch more Montreal games than I do, so I will take your word for it. I do recall Montreal using him as a forward occasionally, but I didn't think they used him that way exclusively.

I do recall first noticing Streit at the 2006 Olympics for Switzerland when he was one of the best defensemen in the tournament and I recall watching him playing in the 2006-07 season for Montreal because I wanted to see if he was "for real" and that the Olympics weren't just an anomaly.

I recall him playing a lot with Markov in Montreal for those two seasons, but perhaps that was mostly just on the PP and my memory is failing me now.
